Spells and Incantations
The Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to present a new collection of
sculptures by John Rose, in his new exhibition Spells and Incantations.
Emanating with a sense of the infinite, these organic forms unravel towards
both the mystery and the familiarity of the natural world.
Rose works primarily with poplar wood because of its 'great plasticity and
beautiful, simple blondness,' creating pieces that are harmonious and
elegant. Aiming for 'some kind of purity, serenity almost' in the forms
constructed, the artist draws from 'information which comes from
investigations into the foundations of the natural world'.
By exposing the organic nature of form, Rose approaches his work from a
deeper level than the Minimalist artists with whom we are most familiar.
Technological aspects are replaced by undulating forms in soft, natural
material, that are at once simple and complex. Thus the artist's organic
sculptures are a combination of complex juxtapositions of such seemingly
incongruous elements as strength and fragility, leaving the viewer in awe of
their 'overall Zen sensibility'.
This is John Rose's third solo exhibition at the Robert Berman Gallery.
