Under the title "Beyond Tomorrow" thirteen museums, exhibition venues and partner institutions will present very different approaches to this common guiding theme. Visitors will experience how stimulating it can be to think about the world of tomorrow and all that has been done throughout cultural history for the sake of a better world. The fine arts festival that takes place every four years, will be open itself up to the cityscape this time around, inviting visitors to embark on their own personal journey of discovery through the art city.
Art has always been a mirror of society – yesterday, today, tomorrow. And art-
ists have always engaged with the future. Their role has not changed even to-
day: to reveal, jolt, stimulate. What future visions do artists evoked? What role
is played by the materials they use? Which knowledge can be gleaned from art
for today’s gaze into the future? Under the title Beyond Tomorrow thirteen mu-
seums, exhibition venues and partner institutions will present from 5 April to 10
August 2014 very different approaches to this common guiding theme. Visitors
will experience how stimulating it can be to think about the world of tomorrow
and all that has been done throughout cultural history for the sake of a better
world. Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014, the fine arts festival that takes place every
four years, will be open itself up to the cityscape this time around, inviting vis-
itors to embark on their own personal journey of discovery through the art city
of Düsseldorf.
The future as shared theme
“We want to spark visitors’ curiosity about the future and encourage them to
envisage what might lie ahead in the years to come”, says Hans-Georg Lohe,
Düsseldorf city councillor in charge of cultural affairs and managing director
of Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014, explaining the mission of this edition of the
festival. “Each art institution will devote itself to a special aspect of the main
theme while at the same time creating substantive links to the other venues.”
Reawakening/ Earth/ Transformation/ Progress/ Experiment/ Utopia/ Heaven/
Fire/ Retreat/ Light/ Curiosity – these eleven concepts create individual access
points while interweaving the various exhibitions like a web overlaying the art
city of Düsseldorf. Some art spaces will focus on a view of the future that entails
experimentation, a sense of reawakening, and transformation; other presenta-
tions will feature works by artists who saw or see the future as a place of re-
treat, fascinated by its darker and more ponderous aspects. Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich,
professor of art history and media philosophy at the Hochschule für Gestaltung
Karlsruhe, developed the thematic concept for the art festival in conjunction
with the curators involved. “This is the first time in Germany that so many in-
stitutions are joining forces to develop a common leitmotif and to venture a
new approach to art mediation”, says Ullrich. Quadriennale Düsseldorf tells
stories about tomorrow primarily from the viewpoint of the materials used by
artists, demonstrating how strongly human fantasies (of the future) have often
revolved around questions of processing and mastering matter.
From the exhibits on view, it will be evident that questions about how to deal with pigments, fabrics, elements and materials have preoccupied artists in a
similar form throughout the centuries – from the Middle Ages up to the present.
Creating new access points
From April to August 2014, a versatile and lively festival programme will create
a number of occasions to engage with the theme of Beyond Tomorrow and
to take off on a new discovery tour of Düsseldorf. The first highlight, designed
to send a resonant starting signal for Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014, will be a
sound installation on opening night composed by the sound artist Rochus Aust
expressly for the art festival, for which he even invented a new musical instru-
ment: the Quadraphone. On the rooftops of all the institutions participating
in Quadriennale Düsseldorf, musicians will play a “Fanfara Futurista” on this
instrument to welcome the whole city to the festival. Numerous further events
on the festival programme are designed to take art out of the White Cube and
onto the streets – addressing people who may hitherto not have taken much
of an interest in art or museums. For just this purpose, Quadriennale Düssel-
dorf 2014 will lay innovative trails enticing viewers into the exhibitions. Even
before opening day, three expedition teams aged 8 to 80 years will be under
way in Düsseldorf trying to track down the answers to questions such as: How
do we get to heaven? What’s meant here by retreat? Where does the light guide
us? They will be making use of “expedition mobiles” designed by Düsseldorf
artists. Curious to learn more about Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014, they will
visit artists, curators and settings and tell of their discoveries and experiences
on the Quadriennale blog, on Facebook and on YouTube. Starting in April 2014,
visitors to Quadriennale Düsseldorf can then accompany the expedition teams
through the exhibitions virtually on mobile guides and get tips and inspira-
tion for their own viewing. The project is being conducted by the Filmwerkstatt
Düsseldorf. As another innovative access point, an urban branding campaign
will subject the festival theme to a special artistic treatment. From mid-March
2014, the linking concepts such as Heaven, Earth and Utopia will be showing
up all over the city.
Cooperation with Art Cologne
Quadriennale Düsseldorf will be cooperating with Art Cologne for the first time in
2014. “With two such high-calibre events this coming April, the Rhineland will be
attracting art-lovers and culture enthusiasts from all over the world”, says Daniel
Hug, artistic director of Art Cologne. Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus GmbH is of-
fering attractive accommodations packages for art associations and culture tourists.
The Quadriennale GmbH
The Quadriennale Düsseldorf is a fine arts festival that has taken place every four years
since 2006, in each case for a period of several months. Since 2008 it has been under the
responsibility of the Quadriennale GmbH, whose sole shareholder is the State Capital of
Düsseldorf. The management team of the Quadriennale GmbH comprises Hans-Georg Lohe
and Angela Eckert-Schweizer. Under a jointly developed guiding theme, the city’s foremost
art museums, exhibition spaces and galleries conceive unique exhibitions, presentations
and an extensive supporting programme. Partners from other sectors are invited to partic-
ipate in the festival. The first Quadriennale took place in 2006 under the theme “The Body in Art” (attracting 380,000 visitors), followed in 2010 by “Presence in Art” (250,000 visitors).
The guiding theme for the Quadriennale in 2014 is Beyond Tomorrow, for the realisation
of which the State Capital of Düsseldorf has set aside a budget of more than four million
Euros.
