/EDB PROJECTS: KSENIA GALIAEVA
Ksenia Galiaeva (Pskov, 1976) is taking us back (again!), to gloomy
afternoons, late night walks with friends, back to the parental kitchen and
the intense synopsis of her life "view from the kitchen window". Back to
all her friends she had to leave, back to the well-known and familiar
places, back to the small town of Pskov, somewhere in the middle of the
Russian countryside, south of St. Petersburg.
It seems that Galiaeva is not only leading us to personal places, but also
leading us back in time. As Hilde de Bruijn describes the work in the
Appel's "In the mean time" catalogue, it "gives the viewer the impression
that what is being depicted has withdrawn itself from time". And that
"there also seems to be an accumulation of several periods from the past,
both on a historical as well as on a personal level". () "several pasts
seem to come together in the shared presence of the photo."
In the gallery, Ksenia Galiaeva will present her latest work with
photographs, a slide installation and photo-albums.
opening Saturday, January 24, 17.00 - 19.00h

/DOLORES: LESLIE KAMPS
The animations of Leslie Kamps (1970, lives and works in Groningen), made
with the aid of computer-programs, are both tragic and humorous. Although
they often consist of only very simple elements such as lines and circles
moving around in a mechanical and repetitive manner there's definitely a
story being told. While watching his schematized representations of human
behavior identification with the mad little black ball seems inevitable.
The animations that bear titles like Tiktak drie (Ticktack three) quite
straightforwardly refer to serious existential matters but display
something mildly lighthearted as well.
In Dolores Leslie Kamps will show 6 animations simultaneously, including
his video Bismarck (2003), a reconstruction of the ruin of the German
battleship Bismarck. According to the history books, the Bismarck, which
the Germans had worked on for years, was finally finished in 1942. The ship
was supposed to lead to a reversal in the Second World War, but it was all
too soon destroyed by the English air force and navy. Two thousand Germans
died.
