La Galleria Patricia Armocida è orgogliosa di presentare Secret Garden prima personale in Italia di Todd James, inaugurazione martedì 13 maggio 2014, ore 19.00.

Per l’occasione, l'artista ha realizzato una selezione di sette acrilici su tela di grandi dimensioni e otto gouache su carta di medio e piccolo formato.

James in occasione della sua prima personale italiana, si diverte a giocare con il sottile sipario che divide l'erotico dall'ironico, catturando le sue donne giunoniche e opulente durante i loro momenti privati, segreti, che avvengono dietro le porte chiuse.

In libertà, insieme ai loro gatti, leggono, bevono tè, fanno yoga, fumano sigarette e si rilassano: parte della quotidianità che va in scena ogni giorno, anche se nascosta.

I colori carichi, le tinte brillanti e le forme fluide dei corpi, dialogano e si fondono con i dettagli degli interni creando un'inedita percezione prospettica e spaziale.

Il momento del relax è ripreso anche nell’altro distintivo e iconico soggetto di Todd James : i Pirati Somali.

Per l’artista, sono ritratti di uomini che si prendono una pausa durante una giornata di lavoro. Uno sguardo senza giudizi che si sofferma sugli istanti di riposo prima che i ragazzi imbraccino nuovamente le loro armi di seconda mano, per assaltare, a bordo di piccole barche, delle navi cargo grandi come palazzi. Sono figure che ricordano Davide e Golia e i temi trattati sono quelli della sopravvivenza, della conquista e dell’ingenuità.

Istantanee pungenti e ruvide, istanti di vita di tutti i giorni, microcosmi privati nei quali siamo segretamente invitati a entrare.

Todd James a.k.a. REAS, (New York 1969), è un artista di fama internazionale che ha iniziato la sua carriera da ragazzino dipingendo le metropolitane di New York City, é il co-creatore della mostra Street Market alla Deitch Projects di New York, che fu poi selezionata per partecipare alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2001. Il lavoro di James è stato in mostra anche all’ Institute of Contemporary Art di Philadelphia, al Tate Museum di Liverpool, alla Parco Gallery di Tokyo, all’ Yerba Buena Center for the Arts di San Francisco, da Colette ,Parigi, alla Lopez Gallery di Madrid, alla Lazarides Gallery di Londra. Galleria Patricia Armocida is proud to present Secret Garden, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Todd James, opening on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at 7:00 PM.

For this occasion, the artist created seven large-scale acrylic on canvas paintings and eight medium and small-scale gouache on paper paintings.

For his first Italian solo exhibition, James toes the thin line between erotic and ironic, capturing his Junoesque and voluptuous women during their private, secret moments taking place behind closed doors.

Freely, together with their cats, they read, drink tea, practice yoga, smoke cigarettes, and relax: fragments of quotidian life that unfold daily behind the scenes.

Bold colors, bright hues, and fluid body shapes communicate and meld with details of interior spaces, creating a fresh perspectival and spatial perception.

This moment of relaxation is also depicted in Todd James’ other characteristic and iconic subject: Somali Pirates.

For the artist, they are portraits of men taking a break from their work. His gaze, void of judgment, falls upon these moments of rest before the men take up their secondhand weapons again to attack towering cargo ships from their tiny boats. These figures address David and Goliath themes of survival, ownership, and ingenuity.

Sharp and rough glimpses, instants of everyday life, private microcosms into which we are secretly invited to enter.

Todd James a.k.a. REAS (New York, 1969) is an internationally recognized artist who began his career as a child painting in the New York City subway system. He is a co-creator of the seminal Street Market exhibition at Deitch Projects in New York, which was selected for the Venice Biennale in 2001. James' work has also been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Tate Museum in Liverpool, the Parco Gallery in Tokyo, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Collette in Paris, Lopez Galleria in Madrid, Lazarides Gallery in London.
