September art contest of 86 young artists from 26 countries in Berlin

Berlin - Sony Europe announced its sponsorship of the ''Sony's Heart'' art contest in Berlin during September. 86 young artists who are currently studying at art schools or universities around the world have submitted entries to the contest, ranging from sculptures, paintings to video art.

''At Sony, we find ourselves at the heart of a rejuvenated city, which itself is rapidly becoming a new centre of Europe and we're all on the edge of a new millennium,'' explained Aldo Liguori, Director Corporate Communications at Sony Europe. ''Sony's Heart Awards reflect the strong and very human creative opportunities that we are currently faced with. They are a celebration of youthful creativity around the world and bring together fantastic examples of artistic talent from many different cultures.''

An exhibition of a selection of the works is being planned at the Sony Centre am Potsdamer Platz following the art contest. Details regarding this exhibition will be announced at a later stage. In addition to sponsoring this competition, Sony Europe has announced a donation of DM 500,000 worth of consumer electronics equipment to kindergartens, schools, residential homes and other organisations in the Berlin area to mark its recent establishment in the city.

''Through the exhibition, we hope that the people of Berlin will continue to visit our new centre and share this celebration of the creative potential of these young artists,'' explained Liguori.

The Sony's Heart Awards' patron is Okwui Enwezor, director of the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. The jury consists of Norio Ohga, Chairman of the Board, Sony Corporation, Helmut Jahn, architect of the Sony Centre am Potsdamer Platz and eight leading figures from the art world. The jury will sit at the Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin on 12 -13 September, after which the winners of this year's awards will be announced.
