I love the feeling of being slightly lost. The X edition of Kunstvlaai represents a broad spectrum of experimental organisations within the visual arts. The interventions will be accompanied by a programme of themed lectures taking place in the various pavilions of the park.
curated by Noor Mertens and Hendrik-Jan Hunneman
The tenth edition of the Kunstvlaai - Platform for Experimental Art Spaces takes place from Wednesday the 21st of May until Sunday the 25th of May 2014 in Amsterdam. Fifty arts initiatives, invited by curators Hendrik-Jan Hunneman and Noor Mertens, will present themselves through spacial interventions at the new location: the Amstelpark in Amsterdam-Zuid. This edition titled ‘From safety to where? I love the feeling of being slightly lost’ promises to be a unique showcase of national and international experimental art initiatives. On January the 16th there will also be a first time Kunstvlaai seminar titled: Do It Ourself – Battlefield or Co-operation at the creative hot spot 'Old School' on the Amsterdam Zuidas.
The Kunstvlaai offers arts initiatives an international platform to engage with and present themselves to a wider public. This 5-day festival represents a broad spectrum of experimental organisations within the visual arts. Since 2012 the Kunstvlaai doesn't have a fixed location, which means that the architectural context also defines the content directive of every edition. The curators for this edition Noor Mertens and Hendrik-Jan Hunneman, developed their directive for the Amstelpark: a spacious and well kept park that was especially created in 1972 for the world horticultural expo Floriade.
Because of the scarcity of inner spaces within the park, they have requested the initiatives to relate to the outside space and present themselves in the park itself. The available vertical space is leading in this concept, symbolised by the basic representation of a billboard. The spacial interventions will be accompanied by a programme of themed lectures taking place in the various pavilions of the park, including activities like a grand opening dinner and speed dating between world wide initiatives.
Kunstvlaai Seminar #1
On Thursday the 16th of January the first Kunstvlaai seminar takes place titled: ‘Do It Ourself – Battlefield or Co-operation’. The Kunstvlaai foundation aims to present itself in between the bi-annual festivals and reflect on subjects that are crucial for small experimental art spaces. Initiators of international festivals Supermarket from Stockholm, Festival of Independents Munich/Now/Here (Haus der Kunst) from Munich and Alt_Cph from Copenhagen will be our guest speakers. Noor Mertens and Hendrik-Jan Hunneman will present their directives during this seminar. There are still places available, please secure your placement via info@kunstvlaai.nl.
