2004 Nikon Summer Salon
Open Entry Photomedia Exhibition
(Gallery 1 & 2)

To be opened by John Swainston
Managing Director of Maxwell Optical Industries.

Featuring recent works by over 300 photomedia artists from across the country, the 2004 Nikon Summer Salon is testament to the ongoing popularity and diversity of contemporary photographic practice. The Salon¹s dynamic mix of styles, subjects and mediums recommends it as one of Australia¹s most significant and well-renowned photographic award exhibitions. Celebrating the latest developments in photomedia practice, the Salon is an annual national event, now in its twelfth year. An open-entry exhibition and competition, the Salon is supported by leaders in the photographic industry and over $5500 worth of prizes are awarded on opening night to the best entries in ten categories. This year new categories include the People¹s Choice Award to be voted by Salon visitors and Excellence in the use of a digital camera.

In 2004, the Nikon Summer Salon presents a unique survey of work in analogue and digital photography, video and mixed media. Incorporating a diversity of techniques and themes, the Salon attracts entries from a broad range of artists, from young and emerging practitioners to students, amateurs, and professionals.

Laki Sideris
Empty(Project Space)

At the eastern end of the incredibly vast Prohibited Area, South Australia's Woomera region is a desolate place of monumental salt lakes and endless plains of ragged shrubs. It is hospitable only to refugee detention centres and unexploded bombs. The few signs of human life consist of abandoned concrete constructions, absurd picnic grounds and signs stating that your presence is not welcome. Above all, a vast canopy of sky dominates, reducing all features of the landscape to an alien flatness that threatens to shroud the entire terrain.

CCP Photoblog
(e-Media)

In keeping with the democratic spirit of the Nikon Summer Salon, this month in the e-Media Gallery we are trying something different. Instead of exhibiting a finished art work, this time it is up to you the CCP community to create it! Simply take a picture and send it by email for everyone to see. See the results online immediately or at the gallery during February 2004. Comments can be added, and relationships with other Œphotoblog¹ communities formed (alternatively, view and add to thematic photo communities such as food.buzznet.com or graffiti.buzznet.com). The intended result of this experiment is a Œphotographic unconscious¹, created by any kind of digital-device with access to the Internet from scanners to mobile phone cameras. What are you waiting for? Add to the world of electronically relayed images with a single click...
