"Oculus" is a photographic investigation on the relationship between images and memory. With this show Only photography starts a new round of exhibitions on photographers who have a relationship with the artistic book.
OCULUS is a photographic investigation on the relationship between images and
memory, exploring the emergent and transient qualities of the image. OCULUS shows
that light can convey complex, liminal notions as we bring our own knowledge to the
image—even if conjured by something as simple and fragmentary as moonlight.
With OCULUS, Ken Schles says that to see is not to know and that perception alone
does not constitute knowledge. Ken Schles, born in New York in 1960, left his first
mark on the photographic scene in 1988 with his now long out of print and heavily
sought after Invisible City (a new edition of this seminal photographic book is
announced).
As with all his publications, and within his photographic practice and teaching
activities, he occupies himself with how images function in our image-based society.
With this show only photography starts a new round of exhibitions on photographic
artists who have a special relationship to the photographic book—artists whose
uniquely individual picture language occupies an important position inside the
international photographic community.
Ken Schles will be present for the opening to sign books and talk to the audience.
