Multiplicity
Multiplicity features more than eighty prints by such outstanding modern and contemporary artists as John Baldessari, Vija Celmins, Chuck Close, Sol LeWitt, Martin Puryear, Susan Rothenberg, Kiki Smith, and Kara Walker. The concept of making multiple images from the same matrix has been integral to printmaking ever since the earliest prints were pulled from woodblocks and metal plates in the fifteenth century. E ach impression is an original work of art. Many of the artists in this exhibition have expanded the idea of multiplicity beyond editions of identical impressions by creating series, sequences, and images that comprise numerous parts. They explore repetition, pairing, and variations on a theme as artistic strategies. Implicit in their work is a challenge to rarity and uniqueness as determinants of value. Multiplicity brings together a selection of prints by artists for whom the idea of multiplicity in its many forms provides a touchstone for their artistic expression. These prints are the result of collaboration between the artist and professional printers who help realize the artist’s vision. They challenge the authority of the unique masterpiece and alter the stereotype of the artist working alone in the studio.
Multiplicity is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum with support from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Endowment Fund. The C.F. Foundation in Atlanta supports the museum’s traveling exhibition program, Treasures to Go.
Additional support for the exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art comes from The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation.

All About Prints
All About Prints is a documentary exploring the art of printmaking from the perspective of influential curators, collectors, dealers, printmakers, and artists. The program touches on the wider history of prints in Western art with an emphasis on key landmarks of printmaking in America. Visually engaging explanations of printmaking terms and techniques are sure to inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of printmaking as a distinctive art form with unique possibilities.
Shot on Hi-Def video at museum print rooms, print fairs, galleries, and print workshops in America and Europe, All About Prints explores the collaborative nature of printmaking, the democratic character of multiples, and the deep-rooted traditions of the art form. The documentary profiles masters of the 19th century like Homer and Whistler; the important contribution of Edward Hopper; the influence of Mexican muralists; the formative years of the Federal Art Project of the WPA; the excitement of the 60s print boom; and the ever-evolving techniques of contemporary artists such as Kiki Smith.
All About Prints is a Stereopticon Pictures Production produced and directed by Christopher Noey. The film was made possible by the generous support of Reba and Dave Williams through The Print Research Foundation. Running Time: 55 minutes

Gestalt: Whole to the Part
Artist Steve Prince's one week residency with MOCA is presented in part by The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation and Acoustical Sheetmetal, Inc.
MOCA’s artist-in-residence, Steve Prince will collaborate with community individuals toward a common goal: creating a 3' by 30' woodblock print: Gestalt: Whole to the Part to be exhibited in MOCA’s Fleming Gallery alongside main gallery exhibition, Multiplicity.
Visual artist and educator Steve Prince will join MOCA as its Artist-in-Residence for one week (May 20—28, 2014) to conduct the creation of the massive woodblock print—Gestalt: The Whole to the Part—involving the participation of members of the Hampton Roads community. Prince defines Gestalt as "a configuration or pattern of elements so unified as a whole that its properties cannot be derived from a simple summation of its part." Style and content of the giant woodblock print become one as the process of creation and the final creation itself present a holistic statement generated from the artist's and the community's contributions
The final woodcut will be printed with an industrial steamroller for the public to witness and exhibited in MOCA’s Fleming Gallery for the duration of the Multiplicity exhibition.
Steve Prince will create one-third of the woodblock print; the other two-thirds of the blocks will be cut into multiple jigsaw pieces and subsequently made by community members into individual artistic creations. The whole will then be assembled and printed to form that a collective print centered on the Hampton Roads community.
This community-based project will connect participants and visitors to the techniques and ideas found in the larger Multiplicity exhibition. Participants and their families will be invited to the exhibition opening of all exhibitions on the evening of May 29, 2014.
This exhibition will be on view in Fleming Gallery.
