S, M, L: Recent Paintings. Space and light are the agents she employs to create these painted abstract images.
DCKT Contemporary is pleased to present S, M, L: Recent Paintings by ANDREA BELAG. This is BELAG’s first solo exhibition in seven years as well as her solo exhibition debut with DCKT Contemporary.
BELAG's paintings boast an intimacy despite their apparent speed. The path of pulling a cloth or paintbrush through transparent paint gives each painting emotional weight and the luminous depth of an interior space. BELAG does not disguise the traces of her hand. She developed her paintings with both agency and chance, choosing her palette from a catalogue of Japanese color combinations and employing knives, spatulas, paper towels and large paint brushes.
BELAG’s paintings are as influenced by Kyoto’s Zen gardens as by artists including Mary Heilmann, Bernard Frize, Hans Hartung and Takuro Kuwata. There is depth to the paintings and complexity in the color language. Space and light are the agents she employs to create these painted abstract images.
ANDREA BELAG lives and works in New York City. She attended Boston University, Bard College and the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture and has been a Faculty Member of the School of Visual Arts since 1995. Her work is included in the collections of the Sprengel Museum Hannover, (Germany), The Jewish Museum (NY), the Newark Museum (NJ) and the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College (MA). Solo exhibitions include the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art as well as galleries in New York and Cologne, Germany. BELAG’s work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Art in America, ARTnews, The Brooklyn Rail and Time Out New York. BELAG is a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.
