"NOTHING BY MOUTH"
NEW PAINTINGS
Littlejohn Contemporary is pleased to announce Mary Hambleton's solo
exhibition, Nothing By Mouth - New Paintings opening on February 5th.
Mary Hambleton's paintings are richly experiential, layered and luscious;
her paintings reference themes of growth, rejuvenation, cell division, the
cosmos, and subtle images of the body. All surfaces, to the edge and
beyond, are touched, treated, and handled with pattern and color.
Ms. Hambleton entertains contradictions, connecting the idea of painting as
illusion to painting as an object. Sudden shifts in treatment, color,
texture, and extentions into sculpture---cubes casually strewn on the top
of some of the paintings---create juxtapositions that exude a sense of
humor, a playful attitude. This playfulness gives way to deeper
sensations, an underside of dissolution and isolation. Dots drift apart,
bands of color never connect and darkness lurks below the painted splendor.
The paintings are ultimately meditations on our uncertain existence,
reflecting the complexities of our lives. Hambleton's paintings strive to
give a sense of how we survive in our world. These long-standing concerns
have been interrupted, informed, and deepened by the artist's struggles
with cancer during the last year and a half.
This will be Brooklyn-based Mary Hambleton's 10th solo show in New York.
The artist attended Bennington College, The Art Students League, and the
San Francisco Art Institute. She has taught at the Rhode Island School of
Design and currently teaches at Parsons School of Design. Hambleton has
shown in numerous galleries, Universities, and Museums internationally and
throughout the U.S., from Pierogi in Williamsburg to Knoedler in London.
Her work is included in the collections of Agnes Gund, Werner Kramarsky,
Esther Grether, The Weatherspoon Art Gallery, the U.S. Department of State,
among many others. In 2002 Hambleton was awarded The Edwin Palmer Memorial
Prize from The National Academy of Design, NYC. Hambleton was also awarded
a very generous grant from The Pollock/Krasner Foundation in 2003. For
