The exhibition will highlight artists who address current events and invite non-political artists to create works that respond to some aspect of the political climate. Instead of focusing on purely formal concerns without any reference to current events, the exhibition will encourage a dialogue among area artists and heighten the public's awareness of current events.

Political Climate will highlight artists who address current events and invite non-political artists to create works that respond to some aspect of the political climate. Instead of focusing on purely formal concerns without any reference to current events, the exhibition will encourage a dialogue among area artists and heighten the public's awareness of current events. It will bring together contemporary art that tackles political issues or current events on the local, national, or international level. All the art in Political Climate will be new work, never before seen publicly in Washington, D.C.
Political Climate is organized by Stephen Bennett Phillips and Faith Flanagan. Conner Contemporary Art is pleased to provide the exhibition space for the exhibition.
'The idea for the exhibition grew out of our concern for the inequities and injustices in the world around us. Living in Washington, D.C. for the past several years, we have come to see how the city works on three different levels,' says curator Stephen Bennett Phillips. 'Being the nation's capital, it is the epicenter of national politics. Since so many of our policies have an impact on the larger world, Washington is an international city. In addition, it has a local scene that has many of the same problems as any urban area in the United States, and the world for that matter. With all of this content in one city, Washington should be a seedbed for creating powerful art that focuses on contemporary issues.'
Political Climate will bring together artists whose work deals with political issues, as well as artists who do not traditionally focus on current events, but who embrace the challenge and want to respond to the opportunity to create a different type of work. It gives exposure to artists who wrestle with political ideas in their art and encourages other artists to incorporate political ideas into their work. This exhibition has content that will make visitors more aware of political issues and rouse them to advocate for real change.
Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11-6pm.
