Peter Buggenhout

Centre international d'art et du paysage, Ile de Vassiviere

While materially embedded in industrial actuality, Buggenhout's works tend towards a shapeless abstraction that evokes a mix of fascination and dread. Like post-apocalyptic hulks, these icons of instability speak to us of humanity's complex relationships.

comunicato stampa

To round off its first cycle of monographic exhibitions – devoted to current issues in sculpture and revisiting the ''stone island'' venture in terms of materials ranging from the most tangible to the infrathin – the International Centre for Art and Landscape has invited Flemish artist Peter Buggenhout for a solo show.

While materially embedded in industrial actuality, Peter Buggenhout’s works tend towards a shapeless abstraction that evokes a mix of fascination and dread. Like post-apocalyptic hulks, these icons of instability speak to us of humanity’s complex relationships with its environment in the Anthropocene. As meticulous in their use of references – including mythologies, non-Western cultures and science fiction – as in their assemblage, they are nonetheless unfailingly disturbing in their refusal to let us pin down what we are actually looking at.

In parallel with the exhibition the artist’s ''Gorgo #13'' (2007, FRAC Limousin Collection) will be on show from 6 April to 8 June at Espace Paul Rebeyrolle in Eymoutiers.
