Vienna International Dance Festival 2014. Artists from all over Europe as well as aspiring newcomers from Asia and North America will stage 14 creations from three different continents at several locations.
Social
upheaval
and
global
crises
are
coming
closer
and
closer.
So
what
to
do?
We
will
do
exactly
what
dance
has
always
done
so
far:
Moving
freely
in
the
most
confined
of
spaces!
Estamira,
the
protagonist
in
Alain
Platel’s
latest
oeuvre
“Tauberbach”
–
the
opening
event,
which
was
co-‐produced
by
les
ballets
C
de
la
B
&
the
Munich
Kammerspiele
–
is
the
perfect
and
inspiring
example
of
this
free
dance
spirit.
This
year’s
festival
will
kick
off
on
17
July
and
continue
to
explore
the
freedom
of
movement
until
17
August:
One
main
focus
of
ImPulsTanz
2014
will
be
an
extended
version
of
the
[8:tension]
Young
Choreographers’
Series.
Artists
from
all
over
Europe
as
well
as
aspiring
newcomers
from
Asia
and
North
America
will
stage
14
creations
from
three
different
continents
at
several
locations:
Schauspielhaus,
Kasino
am
Schwarzenbergplatz
and
MuseumsQuartier
Halle
G.
All
of
these
performances
are
nominated
for
the
Prix
Jardin
d’Europe,
which
–
endowed
with
EUR
10,000
–
is
the
highest
paid
prize
awarded
to
young
contemporary
choreographers
in
Europe
at
a
gala
taking
place
during
ImPulsTanz
festival.
The
main
ImPulsTanz
programme
will
feature
the
elite
of
international
dance.
In
a
ballet
gala
at
the
Volkstheater
Vienna,
Vladimir
Malakhov,
new
artistic
advisor
of
the
Tokyo
Ballet,
will
conclude
the
Wien-‐Welt-‐Wettbewerb
2014,
during
which
both
winners
and
stars
are
set
to
take
dance
to
new
extremes.
US
choreographer
Francesca
Harper
is
one
of
these
stars:
she
worked
as
ballet
advisor
for
the
film
“Black
Swan”
and
has
run
many
ImPulsTanz
workshops
in
the
past
few
years.
South
Africa’s
rising
star,
Dada
Masilo
will
portray
a
humoristic
contemporary
version
of
“Swan
Lake”,
which
also
has
its
roots
in
ballet.
It,
too,
will
take
place
at
the
Volkstheater,
which
will
be
the
venue
of
rather
diversified
artistic
genres:
renowned
violinist
Iva
Bittová
and
David
Zambrano,
leading
figure
of
improvised
dance
will
show
this
diversity
of
genres
in
a
fascinating
duet.
After
six
weeks
of
intense
work,
35
dancers
from
Ismael
Ivo’s
education
project
Biblioteca
do
Corpo
will
claim
the
dance
floor
at
the
Volkstheater
before
heading
off
to
its
South
American
premiere
in
São
Paulo.
Two
performances
will
celebrate
their
world
premieres
at
ImPulsTanz
2014
and
they
are
bound
to
be
shocking,
realistic
and
entertaining
at
once:
the
award
winning
DV8
Physical
Theatre
and
choreographer
Lloyd
Newson
are
currently
creating
a
new
oeuvre
that
is
based
on
male
sexuality,
whereas
a
solo
performance
by
enfant
terrible
Ivo
Dimchev
will
constitute
a
musical
and
visual
attack
against
the
audience’s
senses.
Austrian
choreographer
Chris
Haring
will
also
attempt
such
an
attack
in
his
newest
work
“Deep
Dish”,
travelling
through
time
between
live
choreography
and
film
and
through
the
opulent
set
design
by
Michel
Blazy.
Jérôme
Bel’s
early
work
of
the
same
name
dating
back
to
1995
is
of
minimalistic
beauty
as
it
liberates
dance
from
dance
itself.
Butoh
legend
Ko
Muroboshi,
on
the
other
hand,
will
celebrate
another
world
premiere
with
“Enthusiastic
Dance
on
the
Grave”,
a
journey
into
the
freedom
of
movement.
Amanda
Piña
&
Daniel
Zimmermann
/
nadaproductions,
Florentina
Holzinger,
An
Kaler
and
Akemi
Takeya
will
complete
a
very
strong
group
of
Austrian
dancers
and
performers.
Not
only
will
there
be
an
ample
performance
programme
during
this
year’s
ImPulsTanz,
but
the
audience
itself
will
be
invited
on
the
dance
floor
as
well:
live
concerts
and
DJ
nights
at
the
legendary
festival
lounge
at
the
Burgtheater
Vestibül
or
one
of
the
approximately
200
workshops
at
the
Vienna
Arsenal
will
give
dancers
and
performers
the
opportunity
to
enjoy
an
exceptionally
diverse
festival
programme.
Important
international
figures
such
as
French
choreographer
Mathilde
Monnier,
the
new
director
of
the
Centre
national
de
la
danse
(CND)
in
Paris,
Akram
Khan
dancers
Sade
and
Kristine
Alleyne
and
Austrian
choreographer
Doris
Uhlich
will
participate
in
the
2014
ImPulsTanz
workshop
programme.
Rakesh
Sukesh
will
explore
the
extraordinary
mix
of
contemporary
dance
and
Kalaripayattu,
a
form
of
Indian
martial
art,
L.A.
based
Austrian
dancer
Nina
Kripas
will
give
insight
into
the
world
of
hiphop
and
share
the
experiences
she
gathered
on
stage
with
the
Black
Eyed
Peas
and
performer
and
activist
Keith
Hennessy
will
discover
the
“Queer
Shamanic
Potential”.
