Performances. Focusing on his performative fabric and paper works from the late 1960s and 1970s, the series honors the close relationship that Byars shared with MoMA.
In conjunction with James Lee Byars: 1/2 An Autobiography, a major retrospective on view at MoMA PS1 (June 15–September 7, 2014), the Department of Media and Performance Art and MoMA PS1 will present a series of performances in various sites throughout the Museum. Focusing on his performative fabric and paper works from the late 1960s and 1970s, which bring together the genres of drawing and sculpture with notions of the ephemeral and disappearance, the series honors the close relationship that Byars shared with MoMA.
The Performance Program is organized by Ana Janevski, Associate Curator, with Leora Morinis, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art.
JAMES LEE BYARS: PERFORMANCES is organized in collaboration with Peter Eleey, Curator and Associate Director of Exhibitions and Programs, MoMA PS1; with Jocelyn Miller, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA PS1.
The performance program is made possible by MoMA’s Wallis Annenberg Fund for Innovation in Contemporary Art through the Annenberg Foundation.
