ART-O-RAMA, first international contemporary art fair in the south of France, has been developing since 2007 a new format that makes it unique, an exclusive selection of international galleries made by a demanding artistic committee on the basis of a specific project. Each booth is considered as an exhibition space which architectural specificities lie on the gallery's curatorial proposition for our fair. We enable gallery owners to present themselves under a unique and original light by signing their booth with their artistic line. The professional days are followed with a two-week exhibition for the general public.
For the first time, ART-O-RAMA will present a group show simultaneously to the fair, within the brand new exhibition spaces of the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille.
Ce que raconte la solitude is curated by Elena Lydia Scipioni with Bas Jan Ader, Meris Angioletti, Alighiero Boetti, André Cadere, Ali Cherri, Mathis Collins, Jimmie Durham, Adrià Julià, Dominik Lang, Julia Meltzer and David Thorne with Rami Farah, Janis Rafa, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa, Gilad Ratman, Olve Sande, Nancy Spero, Benjamin Valenza, Guido van der Werve, and writer Golan Haji.
The exhibition takes its start from Marseille, a city of casual meetings and cultural convergences, where numerous artists and intellectuals found refuge during the Second World War. Through the works of a group of international contemporary artists, the show will orient the focus towards different geographies and chronologies, towards manifestations of ongoing changes or different expressions of artists' commitment in order to explore isolation as a possible condition of creativity in relation to individual or collective resistance.
The title of the exhibition was conceived by writer Golan Haji.
Specifically for this occasion, the Musée Cantini of Marseille will exhibit the Jeu de Marseille (1941), the playing cards born at the Villa Air Bel from the collaboration between André Breton and some refugee artists.
Exhibition catalogue published by ART-O-RAMA—edited by Elena Lydia Scipioni with texts by Golan Haji and the curator—graphic design: Huz & Bosshard.
