FUCK YOU, Eu.ro.Pa!

Nicoleta Esinencu
Reading

Moldavian author Nicolete Esinencu's new theatrical play is an unmistakable reckoning with the figure of the father and with the topic of Europe. An essay competition with the title 'Heimat' runs through the text like a leitmotif and makes analogies to socialism ('one for mother, one for father, one for the country'). Europe is personified as a lover, but this love is unwaveringly connected to pain. Created at Solitude, constructed like a monologue, Esinencu's penetrating prose is captivating in its simplicity and directness.

Nicoleta Esinencu, born in 1978 in Chisinau, Moldavia, studied dramaturgy and set design at the State University of the Arts in Chisinau. She has been the dramaturg at the Eugène Ionesco Theater in Chisinau since 2002. Selected projects include 'A piece of breath' (play, theater festival, Iasi, Romania, 2001) and 'The seventh coffee-house' (coauthor of the play based on interviews with woman who were sold and forced into prostitution, Bonner Biennale and Festival Balkanisation Générale, Paris, 2002). Esinencu has been Solitude fellow since September 2003.

Performance/Installation

Installation accompanying the exhibition opening

Finnish artist Tea Mäkipää revisits her spectacular November 2003 exhibition in The London Wapping Project with her performance installation 'Expert,' in which she visualizes one of the most shocking human acts - suicide. Here, she confronts the viewer with their own feelings of guilt and feelings between the desire for sensation and sympathy.

Tea Mäkipää, born in 1973 in Lahti, Finland, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Helsinki and at the Royal Art School in Stockholm. Selected exhibitions are: 'Domesticated Dreams' (Kiasma, Helsinki, 2000), 'Solo show' (Färgfabriken, Stockholm, 2001), 'Rape of Europe' (Galerie Luke & A, London, 2003), 'Paradise' (Bunker am Alexanderplatz, Berlin, 2003) and 'Supermarket' (Helsinki Art Hall, 2003). Tea Mäkipää has been a fellow at the Akademie since 2003.

'Expert' is commissioned by The Wapping Project as part of Jerwood Commission 2003 series.

Patricia Reed
Exhibition

In her video installations, Pia Fuchs (aka Patricia Reed) examines the space between individuals in the act of conversation. Here, she reflects the situation of the location, Solitude, as a site where strangers gather and intermingle, meet and get closer to each other, and establish bonds. The work questions not the spoken words, but rather the gaps and microgestures within the dialogues that occupy the space between the conversations in a sometimes surprising and unpredictable way - or that are present as background noise.

Pia Fuchs, born in 1977, has worked with the relationship between location and identity since 2001. She adopts indigenous identities corresponding to the site of the exhibition. The singular identity of the individual is expanded into a polyphonous form, with each name becoming an echo of a connection. Her most recent projects include 'Pairs: Invisible City,' a sociological internet opera, and 'CO-operative IN difference.' Fuchs (a.k.a. Patricia Reed) has been a Solitude fellow since September 2003.

Friday, February 20th, 2004 to Sunday, March 14th, 2004.

Point of View

Marlena Kudlicka
Exhibition

'The sign in itself warns, makes us aware of something special - it is a synthesis of communication. The traffic sign 'rotary' has a special meaning, it alludes to the possibility of decision; on the other hand, the directional choices can also be confusing. The point of view is a matter of perspective - or vice versa.'
Marlena Kudlicka

In her exhibition in the Akademie's lower Hirschgang, Marlena Kudlicka questions the influence of codes and signs on our point of view.

Marlena Kudlicka, born in 1973 in Tomaszow Lub, Poland, studied visual arts at the Art Academy in Jaroslaw and at the School for Visual Arts in Poznan. Her most recent projects include 'Oxygenation' (Festival of Young Art, Krakow, 2002), 'Bielska Jesien' (Municipal Gallery, Bielsko Biala, Poland 2003) and 'Open Day Exhibition' (Art Omi International Arts Center, NY, USA, 2003). Marlena Kudlicka has been a fellow at the Akademie since September 2003.

Chronochroma 4

Rodney La Tourelle
Exhibition

For a number of years, Rodney LaTourelle has been producing site-specific works that articulate a conceptual space between art and architecture. His work has focused specifically on installations that explore relationships between light, color, space and the human body.

The project at Solitude uses a vocabulary of spatial transitions, color associations, and 'oscillating' rhythms of reflection and absorption in order to layer domains of light. Through its modulation of light and scale, the work foregrounds an unmediated sensory experience and evokes memories that are rooted in the body.

Rodney LaTourelle, born in Winnipeg in 1965, studied architecture and landscape architecture at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He works as an installation artist, designer, architect, curator and writes for various Canadian art magazines. LaTourelle has been a fellow at the Akademie since September 2003.
