Olafur Eliasson

Mannheimer Kunstverein, Mannheim

Your trust. In the exhibition, the encounter between visitor and artwork is in focus. The centrepieces of Your trust are five new glass sculptures, complemented by a series of five watercolours, a large-format book made of glass. The artist uses colour, light and movement in his intense, experiential, and expansive installations.

Olafur Eliasson is known for his use of colour, light and movement in his intense, experiential, and expansive installations. Over the past year his "Starbrick” has cast a spell over visitors - its 35 light modules suspended, cloud-like, in the majestic domed hall of the Kunsthalle Mannheim's Jugendstil-Building. With the exhibition "Your trust", the Kunsthalle again presents an artist who has not been exhibited in south-western Germany for 13 years. “Your trust” focuses on the spatial experience of colour and light. The show provides an insight into the world of one of the most important international contemporary artists. At the same time it is an invitation to visitors to become more consciously aware of their own perception and understanding.

At the heart of “Your trust” are six new glass exhibits, seen here for the first time in a museum setting. They are accompanied by other works from Studio Eliasson that explore our perception of colour and light. This includes a series of watercolours as well as a glass book to be displayed in the old library.

Eliasson's six glass works are “machines of perception” activated by the viewer. The effect depends not just on the light, but also the position and movement of the visitor. The installation consists of six coloured shapes, from elongated oval to circle, lined up one behind the other. When looking into these layers of colour, shape and reflection, we become aware of how much our perception is influenced by space and materials. The visitor is able to view this ever-changing artwork from many angles and perspectives. The exhibition emphasizes once again the guiding philosophy of the Kunsthalle as museum in motion.

Olafur Eliasson was born in Copenhagen in 1967 and grew up in Iceland and Denmark. His body of work includes installations and sculpture as well as photography and film. Eliasson is renowned for, among other things, “The weather project” (2003) at Tate Modern and “The New York City Waterfalls” (2008). Since 1995, the artist's studio has been based in Berlin. Here around 70 engineers, architects, archivists, programmers, chefs and art historians are involved in a creative process based on experimentation to develop artworks, exhibitions and structural projects.

We would like to thank Olafur Eliasson and his studio along with Caroline Eggel for their creative co-operation.
