SUSAN PURDY
New Branches on an Old Tree
(Gallery 1)
New Branches on an Old Tree is a unique project that combines oriental
botanic specimens with elements from diverse sources to tell stories about a
culture in which plants form the central motif. It uses the Chinese model of
sensory engagement with the garden in the presentation of this innovative
new work. The comprehensive and original archive of photogram images that
make up New Branches on an Old Tree are the culmination of four years
collaboration between artist Susan Purdy and Terry Smyth, the Curator of the
Southern Chinese Collection within the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. This
exhibition seeks to encourage increased appreciation of the importance of
botanical collections in ensuring the conservation of species diversity.
Supported by the Arts Victoria, The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and
Monash University.

PETER ROBERTSON
Beyond Xanadu
(Gallery 2)
In 1980, leaving the Sharpies gang behind, Peter Robertson moved to
Melbourne to start a new life for himself modelling; the next few years were
a fusion of fashion, nightclubs and art. Beyond Xanadu chronicles a time of
great change for Robertson and Australia. Fashion was baggy trousers, padded
shoulders and colour. Music had become New Wave. Beyond Xanadu is a
retrospective series that chronicles both a real and imagined past. We¹ve
moved on so far now, these ambiguous images of fashion spreads seem
ludicrous. Why is it we can see the absurdity in aesthetics of an earlier
period, yet fail to see it now?
A cultural event of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
Free Forums at CCP
Between 15-19 March, at 6.30pm every evening, CCP is proud to be hosting a
series of 5 free forums as part of the arts program of the L'Oreal Melbourne
Fashion Festival. These include a forum on '80s style' in the context of
Peter Robertson's work (with the artist), and a CCP forum 'Fashion
Photography Now' on Friday evening (immediately after the launch of
Photofile 71: Fashion, also at CCP).

KOKY SALY
How Much Longer Will You Live Like This
(Project Space)
Koky Saly's series How Much Longer Will You Live Like This explores the
notion of displacement through the eyes of his mother, whose status has
changed from fisherwoman to refugee, to Australian citizen to
'Asian-Australian¹. Adopting lighting and composition cues from film noir
cinema, these works engage the viewer in dramas that never fully reveal
themselves  unravelling a story of loss and hidden strength. And although
it is deeply personal and biographical, it is also anchored in Australia¹s
history.

BEAT BROGLE
One Word Movie
(e-Media)
One Word Movie is an extraordinary online project by Swiss artist Beat
Brogle, which organises the flood of images on the Internet into a
flickering film  based on a word provided by the user. A specially
programmed search engine, built on top of popular image search facilities
available on the Internet, forms the basis for this fascinating exploration
of the Internet imaginary. Supplied with that most banal of Internet actions
a search term  the engine produces a hit list of images that provide the
raw material for a 'movie¹ (generated instantaneously using the latest web
imagery). With a kinship to structural film of the 1960s and 1970s, this
semantic image search raises the cognitive question that has figured
prominently in modern art  the relationship between image and text. This
time it is posed anew, as a practical and urgent matter, directly affecting
the habits of millions of Internet users.
Supported by the Swiss Arts Council.
Opening: Thursday 11 March, 6-8pm
