A Dieter Roth retrospective is the first comprehensive museum overview of the work of Swiss artist Dieter Roth (1930–1998), one of the most influential European artists of the postwar period. This full-scale retrospective includes nearly 350 works, showcasing five decades of work and the full range of Roth's creative activities—drawings, graphics, books, paintings, sculptural objects, installations, and film and video works.

A Dieter Roth Retrospective

MoMA and its affiliate P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center present the life's work of a restless innovator through drawings, prints, paintings, sculptural objects made of chocolate and cheese, large-scale installations at P.S.1, and films.

Born in Hannover, Germany, Roth (1930-1998) worked primarily in Iceland and Switzerland, and he left behind an extremely complex and diverse oeuvre that has influenced the direction of contemporary art.

Roth Time: A Dieter Roth Retrospective is the first comprehensive museum overview of the work of Swiss artist Dieter Roth (1930–1998), one of the most influential European artists of the postwar period. This full-scale retrospective includes nearly 350 works, showcasing five decades of work and the full range of Roth's creative activities—drawings, graphics, books, paintings, sculptural objects, installations, and film and video works. Roth Time, presented at both MoMA QNS and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, reflects the vast formal, conceptual, and poetic scope of Roth's oeuvre as well as his use of diverse media. The exhibition presents Roth's work as an innovative, inspired, chaotic, and lucid whole, mirroring both an individual and an epoch.

The exhibition is organized by Schaulager Basel in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Museum Ludwig, Cologne.

The exhibition is made possible by Schaulager Basel and the Laurenz Foundation. Additional generous support is provided by Kathleen and Richard Fuld, Novartis, and The Contemporary Arts Council of The Museum of Modern Art. The Museum also acknowledges the assistance of Mimi and Peter Haas, Pro Helvetia, and The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art. The accompanying educational programs are made possible by BNP Paribas. The installations at P.S.1 are supported by James Family Foundation.
