In 'the micro-world of plants' the artist presents photographs that showing plants or plant tissue were taken with the use of a fluorescence microscope.

Works by Magdalena Turzańska, a biologist from the Institute of Experimental Biology of Wrocław University, received distinctions and a prize at world’s best microscope photography competitions in 2011, 2013 and 2014, organised each year by Nikon and Olympus, leading producers of optical equipment.

All the photographs showing plants or plant tissue were taken with the use of a fluorescence microscope. So far, a picture of Barbilophozia sp., a leafy liverwort similar to bryophytes, has won the highest award and the greatest appreciation of photograph fans all over the world. Some of her other photographs were shown on the cover of the last three annual publications of Acta Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, the most important botany magazine in Poland.

We would like to invite you to a meeting with Magdalena Turzańska on 25 February (Wednesday), accompanied by a presentation of her most recent photographs. She will talk about the unique character of working with such peculiar models and about various methods of taking these “cosmic” pictures.

Magdalena Turzańska
works at the Department of Plant Developmental Biology of the Institute of Experimental Biology of Wrocław University. Throughout her almost 30-year-long professional career, she has been involved both in laboratory work and field research, mainly of bryophytes in Lower Silesia. In her microtechnical lab, she makes plant preparations for academic and didactic purposes and she deals with microscope images in her daily work. Photography has always been used to document scientific work and produce didactic materials but after the transfer of Acta’s editorial office to Wrocław in 2011, it became necessary to supply pictures that would add luster to the publication. As a result, more spectacular and slightly less scientific photographs started to be taken. The combination of the possibilities offered by microscope techniques and digital photography of such untypical objects resulted in these amazing effects
