comunicato stampa

VOLTA NY is an invitational fair of solo-artist projects and is the American incarnation of the original VOLTA show, which was founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived in 2008 as a focused, curated, boutique event that is a place for discovery. The exhibition showcases relevant contemporary art positions regardless of the artist’s or gallery’s age. By refocusing on artists through solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of its selected participants. These galleries must maintain deeply meaningful connections with their artists and follow them throughout their careers. In turn, invited galleries exhibit in an elegant venue, elevating their respective platforms for an experience mutually beneficial to fair visitors and the galleries alike.

In March 2015, VOLTA NY inaugurates its new home location at PIER 90 in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. The landmark move positions it adjacent to Piers 92 and 94, the longtime platform for its sister fair, The Armory Show, and the focal point of March fair season. Moving to PIER 90 allows for synergy between both fairs and their collector bases while retaining VOLTA NY's distinct character and rigorous curation — the foundation for VOLTA's mission since its 2008 debut.

VOLTA NY is a platform for challenging, often complementary — and sometimes competing — ideas about contemporary art. Single-artist booths functioning more closely to proper exhibitions rather than traditional presentations proliferate the contemporary fair scene now. VOLTA NY has made solo projects its mandate and foundation from its inception in 2008, offering a prime opportunity to discover the practices of today's most salient artists while refocusing the art fair experience back to its most fundamental point: the art itself.

About Pier 90
"Having celebrated our tenth anniversary in Basel by moving to a more mature and central venue, we felt that in New York it was also time to take the platform up a notch," enthused VOLTA Artistic Director Amanda Coulson. "I'm more than excited to announce that VOLTA NY is settling in comfortably alongside its sister fair into the more accessible venue PIER 90, leveling the playing field and giving our galleries even better visibility and access to the crossover crowds already attending both fairs. As the scrappy baby in the family, however, we intend to maintain our different vision for presentations and layout and bring the inimitable VOLTA flair to the venue."

The landmark move positions VOLTA NY adjacent to The Armory Show, its sister fair and the focal point of Armory Arts Week. Moving to PIER 90 energizes a synergy between both fairs while retaining VOLTA NY's distinctive identity as New York's established boutique showcase for new and salient contemporary art positions within a curated, solo-project format – the foundation of VOLTA's mission since its 2008 stateside debut.

The newly renovated PIER 90 offers 75,000 square feet of open exhibition space. Broad windows lining the pier provide ample daylight and scenic views of the Hudson River. As well, the sprawling interior space affords plenty of room for approximately 90 international exhibitors to showcase compelling solo projects that reaffirm VOLTA NY as a platform for discovery and refocus the art fair experience back to the art itself.

PIER 90 can be reached by public transportation via the Eighth Avenue line (E or C trains to 50th Street) or the Seventh Avenue line (1 train to Broadway/50th Street). Additionally, PIER 90 is located just four city blocks from Pier 94: The Armory Show – Contemporary and is connected by an elevated covered passageway to Pier 92: The Armory Show – Modern.
