Tuesday 30 March, 20.30 hrs

Today we would like to invite you to a special film programme dedicated to the work of Chinese artist Yang Fudong (1971, Shanghai), finalist Hugo Boss Prize 2004. This event takes place on Tuesday evening 30 March, at the Kompaszaal in Loods 6, Amsterdam.

Yang Fudong
The films and videos of Yang Fudong depict the changes in contemporary Chinese society. Fudong captures the feelings of alienation and uncertainty felt by a young generation of Chinese, that – like Fudong himself – grew to maturity in a rapidly transformed society. His poetic and sometimes melancholic films take place in high-rise apartment and office buildings – the quasi-capitalistic environment of the new middle-class – or in dreamlike setting reminiscent of traditional Chinese gardens. Even if there is a narrative structure, it's the visually allusive details that tell the story. A young mundane girl, dressed in miniskirt and several fur coats, surrounded by blanky gazing men in Mao-suits; a lovers couple boating among a reedy lake, filmed in misty black-and-white images common to the Chinese cinema of the 1920/30s ... this calculated mix of traditional Chinese stereotypes and so-called fashionable western elements reveals the incongruities of a society in transition.

'Seen as a whole, the films, in their unyielding beauty, present a cautionary portrait of contemporary China negotiating an altogether different cultural revolution' (Artforum, 2004)

Hugo Boss Prijs 2004
Yang Fudong is a finalist of the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize 2004. The $50,000 award is given every two years to an artist whose work represents a significant development in contemporary art. The other finalists are: Franz Ackermann, De Rijke/De Rooij, Rivane Neuenschwander, Simon Starling and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The winner will be announced in October 2004.

Film programme
Quarantine Series presents a selection of Yang Fudongs short films - Honey (9', 2003), Liu Lan (14', 2003) and City Light (6', 2000) – and his first feature-length film: An Estranged Paradise (76', 1997-2001). Especially for this occasion we move to a bigger space (Kompaszaal) in the building of our foundation Kunstwerk Loods 6.

Kompaszaal/Loods 6
The Kompaszaal ('compass room') in Loods 6 is a unique space with an authentic interior from the 1950/60s and a beautiful view on the water. The space is being renovated this very moment and will open to public again for the first time on Tuesday 30 March. Loods 6 is located on the KNSM-laan 143 in Amsterdam, the entrance of the Kompaszaal is at the very end (east side) of the building.
