Canzone. Music as storytelling
Angela Cavalieri explores the art of writing in visual form. In her large-scale hand printed linocuts, literary, religious and historical narratives eventually manifest as image. Sources include poetry, music, religious epitaphs and inscriptions on public buildings. Most recently, Cavalieri has been working with the operas and madrigals of Monteverdi & his contemporaries, exploring music as storytelling. Using Pietro Bembo's idea of 'word painting', the musical illustration of text, the artist re-works this to create a new visual narrative from the words and lyrics of the madrigals.
