How are stereotypes to be dislocated and identities re-presented? This is the challenge of the work Role-taking, Role-making by the artist Danica Dakić, presented for the first time in Paris at Secret Cinema.
Role-Taking, Role-Making (2004/2005) was realized in cooperation with the ensemble of the Romani Theater Pralipe, Cologne, and residents of the Romani enclaves Preoce and Plementina in Kosovo.
The video documents Danica Dakic’s examination of roles and the ways they are represented and perceived.
The work deals with questions of the theater (as an institution) and theatricality (as a mode of everyday performativity) in the context of the specific historical and political situation : the one of Roma community in south east Europe (Kosovo) and Western Europe (Cologne) in the post-Yugoslavian era. The act of adopting a role, of acting it and developing it, is tied back in with the question of which roles are available to Roma as “gypsies” in societies inside and outside the EU and in the history of Western art and culture. It is question to understand which paths lead out of discriminatory patterns of role attribution and prejudice, of racist exclusion and violence. Reflection on the conditions and repertoires of role-specific behavior opens up a space for movement and alters perceptions of self and other.
Danica Dakić's (1962 *, Sarajevo) scope of work extends from video and film to photography and installation. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally. She has participated in many group exhibitions including documenta 12, Kassel (2007), Istanbul Biennial (2003), and (2009), Biennale of Sydney (2010), Liverpool Biennial (2010), Kyiv Biennale (2012), Marseille-Provence / European Capital of Culture, Marseilles (2013) und the Biennale in São Paulo (2014). Her recent solo exhibitions include presentations at the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main (2013), Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2011), Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2010), Generali Foundation, Vienna (2010), and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2009). She currently lives in Düsseldorf, Sarajevo and Weimar.
