Politics of Representation of the Black (Female) Body
A panel in the framework of the exhibition Body Talk: Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists. These four lectures are conceived to discuss the curatorial and analytical concepts that led to the organization of Body Talk. It addresses the complex legacies of the representation of the black body pervading societal interaction globally and the mythological construction of black female sexuality. It also addresses the passions and contradictions that surround the subject. The over-determination of the African female body through the discussion will situate the genealogy of such constructions and examine the relationship between enduring stereotypes and strategies of liberation through political and social movements, and through art and curatorial practice. 11:00 am Welcome by Dirk Snauwaert. 11:10 Letter to Saartjie, Legacies of stigmatization and stereotyping Koyo Kouoh. 11:40 Sarah Baartman: Epistemologies of Empowerment Pointing towards crucial questions in the representation of the black female body: how do these bodies talk?
