City:Looking into the Changes of Shanghai in Modern Times and the Reasons behind through Six Books

During the several decades from 1940s to today, Shanghai went through a huge makeover and transformed from a town in South China into the biggest metropolis in the Far East. And by taking full chance of the clashing of western and eastern cultures, it has yielded remarkable economic, social and cultural achievements. There has been research about this period of history since modern times. Studies of modern Shanghai have become a well-established principle by 1990s, and breakthroughs have been made in both perspectives and depths. This lecture will start from Revelations of 'Big Shanghai Plan' the Planning, Changes and Evolvement of Downtown Area in Modern Shanghai and other five books to explain the changes in modern Shanghai and the evolvement of architecture in Shanghai through multiple perspectives to help the audience gain a more comprehensive understanding of modern Shanghai. Zhang Peng is an associate professor at the Department of Architecture of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University. He obtained a doctor's degree in history and theory of architecture from Tongji University. He is now a member of A2-Chinese Traditional Architecture Research Team and dedicated to the teaching and research of the protection and regeneration of historic architecture, the techniques of protecting historic architecture, the contemporary history of China's cities and the history of China's architecture. He has taken part in 5 government sponsored research projects. He has published 14 papers and one monograph. He also participated in the translation of 2 books and the composition of one. In 2009, he won the title of Excellent Young Teacher of Tongji University. May 2, 2015 Saturday 19:30 - 21:00.
