Berlin's popular international art fair - returns for the fifth time in 2000 to the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. This event is jointly organised and operated by the EUROPEAN GALLERIES Projektgesellschaft mbH and Messe Berlin GmbH. Approximately 150 galleries from over 20 countries present a fascinating spectrum of art spanning positions established in the 1960's and still relevant today up to the most current tendencies on 16,000 square meters of exhibition space. Owing to its clear profile, art forum berlin has in a short time established itself as an extraordinary meeting place for the exchange of information and communication as well as the trade and mediation of contemporary art.
This year art forum berlin celebrates its fifth anniversary and, although having already established its name within the international art scene, it remains innovative and keen on experimentation. In many ways, the art fair is a reflection of the city of Berlin which is in the process of re-inventing itself and whose unusually creative potential is continually expanding. The independent art scene in Berlin has contributed substantially to the city's growing reputation as the new German cultural capital. Due to the steady inflow of foreign gallerists, artists, and art mediators, the city is experiencing a cultural renaissance. The young galleries of Berlin now enjoy an international reputation which is referred to in the same breath as those of London and New York; artists careers move from here out into the world.
On the platform of this dynamic setting, art forum berlin - enthusiastically supported by our main sponsor, Bankgesellschaft Berlin - welcomes exhibitors and visitors from around the world into the city each autumn. Anyone who desires to stay abreast of current developments in the contemporary art scene and its context will find their interests rewarded. In 1999, approximately 16,000 art-enthusiasts, over 1000 journalists from 31 countries, as well as numerous renowned collectors, museum directors and curators from both Germany and abroad met at art forum berlin for lively exchange and the development of their collections. Selected by an international jury, galleries exhibiting at art forum berlin are arranged alphabetically and feature both the stars of the international art scene and more recent, yet to be discovered talents. This singular format affords visitors to a particularly clear and concentrated view of the current status of contemporary art. Especially in light of the fact that art forum berlin has always been distinguished by a particularly high level of international participation. Through shared booths of domestic and foreign galleries together, a further increase in international exhibitors can be expected in the anniversary year 2000.
Aside from the high quality of content, art forum berlin also offers pleasant and efficient conditions for its exhibitors and visitors alike. Moving into more spacious halls at the Berlin Fair Grounds featuring an over-all ceiling height of more than ten meters and natural daylight, the art fair this year offers more places of rest, cafés, and restaurants, as well as a library with accompanying reading room and a forum for discussions, performances, and receptions. Thus visitors are provided with the opportunity both to study or linger as well as for stimulation and excitement. Furthermore, the new location affords sufficient grounds for berlin's characteristic experimental booth arrangements as well as generous space for open presentations.
In the context of the .kunstherbst Berlin, Berlin's autumn celebration of art and culture, a multitude of exciting exhibitions and events will be running parallel to the fair. Highlights include the exhibition inaugurating the new "Prize of the National Gallery for Young Art" in which the work of the four short-listed candidates for the prize will be shown. Also opening during this week of celebration will be the travelling exhibition "After the Wall," which includes 140 young artists from Eastern Europe.
Let yourself become inspired by art and join us for the fifth anniversary celebration of art forum berlin!
