Paul Catherall

Clapham Art Gallery, London

London Brighton New York. Combined with his original choice of subject, Catherall's works reveal an expertise in colour as well as great draughtsmanship and develop from a powerful compositional base. With his stated interest in classic English railway posters and twentieth century Soviet propaganda, Catherall makes works that achieve a delicate balance between classic commercial design and contemporary urban landscape.

'LONDON BRIGHTON NEW YORK'

PAUL CATHERALL has become one of London's leading printmakers during his relationship with CLAPHAM ART GALLERY throughout the last five years. As well as achieving a great amount of press coverage in publications such as The Independent, The Observer, Evening Standard, Metro and Design Week, Catherall has also been exhibited in collaboration with London Underground and has received a wide selection of corporate illustrative commissions including Harper Collins, The Sunday Times, Marks & Spencer, and London Eye. Catherall has most recently been commissioned to produce six linocuts for the London Elections in June 2004.

Catherall has become very well known for his particular style of architectural linocut printmaking. Previously featuring London landmarks such as Battersea Power Station, Tate Modern and the Southbank, Catherall has both revisited and widened his concern to Brighton and New York, illustrating landmarks such as the Brighton Pier, Brooklyn Bridge and the Flatiron. Catherall is taken by 'structures that are part of our everyday urban landscape – some celebrated, some derided, some merely overlooked'. As the artist states, 'these are all strikingly unique architectural constructs served by natural light, which constantly transforms their shapes and silhouettes'.

Within this most recent collection, Catherall has tended towards two approaches, that is images where the structure stands alone in its totality as in 'Tate Red' or where the subject is closely cropped, verging on the semi-abstract as in 'Telecom Grey'. Through these means Catherall celebrates the overall impact of a construction or focuses on a specific detail within a building, which causes the viewer to reassess his or her perception of that structure. In totality we are presented with a considered collection of works that combine uniquely the artist's sensitivity towards design, atmosphere and environment.
