XXIV Journeys

Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London

Sol LeWitt - Mimmo Paladino. The original idea for this intriguing exhibition of twenty-four gouaches was conceived at a meeting in Rome between Sol LeWitt and Mimmo Paladino. Both artists began twelve works which they then exchanged and completed. The contrast between the work of Paladino and that of LeWitt is clearly visible and highlights the enthusiastic and productive dialogue between the two artists.

Sol LeWitt - Mimmo Paladino

The original idea for this intriguing exhibition of twenty-four gouaches was conceived at a meeting in Rome between Sol LeWitt and Mimmo Paladino. Both artists began twelve works which they then exchanged and completed. The contrast between the work of Paladino and that of LeWitt is clearly visible and highlights the enthusiastic and productive dialogue between the two artists.

Sol LeWitt (b. 1928) is an influential graphic artist and sculptor, whose work first came to prominence during the 1960s when he was one of the foremost exponents of Minimalism. Perhaps best known for his ‘structures’ – complex constructions based around repetitions of basic geometric forms – LeWitt was in fact a pioneer of conceptual art. Mimmo Paladino (b.1948) is one of the foremost contemporary Italian artists and considers work on paper – including work for the press – to be of fundamental importance, and it occupies a key position within his oeuvre.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated book, edited by the critic and art historian Bruno Corà, Professor of the History of Contemporary Art in the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the Università degli Studi, Cassino. The exhibition is supported by the Italian Cultural Institute and Valentina Bonomo Arte Contemporanea.
