comunicato stampa

More than 40 international galleries will take part in the 13th annual ART.FAIR. The Taiwan Contemporary Art Show is a special highlight. On a 240-square-meter space, nine galleries will provide insights into the Taiwanese art scene. The show will be curated by Manray Hsu, who was a member of the jury for the Vienna Biennale and has organized many exhibitions domestically and abroad.

For Canvas Contemporary (Amsterdam, Netherlands), ART.FAIR marks its first participation in a trade fair in Germany. Canvas specializes in contemporary Asian art. It will be featuring four Chinese artists to represent the gallery, which was founded in 1995: Zhang Jian-Jun, Shen Chen, Unmask, and Liu Ye. Another participant coming from the Netherlands is Rademakers Gallery (Amsterdam), exhibiting photographs by Dutch artist Henrik Kerstens, among others. His work, which creates a dialogue between photography and painting, is reminiscent of the work of the Dutch Masters.

For the first time in many years, Christopher Cutts Gallery (Toronto) from Canada will be attending ART.FAIR again. In addition to Canadian artists like Mat Brown, Sherry Hay and Chinese artist Xiao Guo Hui, it will also be presenting work by Austrian painter Martin Herbst and sculptures by Czech artist Richard Stipl. Galleri Franz Pedersen (Horsens) will provide a look at the Danish art scene. Here, visitors will be able to admire work from young Danish artists René Holm and Maria Rubinke in addition to work from more established artists like Michael Kvium.

Post-war modernism
Galerie & Kunsthandel Draheim (Wiesbaden), which specializes in 20th-century art, will be exhibiting at ART.FAIR for the fourth time. In addition to a museum triptychon by Quadriga artist Heinz Kreutz, it will be showing colored gouaches from Karl Otto Götz, who is now 101 years old. Original Expressionist works, for instance by August Macke, selected graphic pieces from international artists like Sigmar Polke and Günther Förg, and work from the estate of artist Rolf Hans (1938-1996) round out the program.

Boesso Art Gallery (Bolzano, Italy) will be presenting geometric abstraction from the post-war era. In addition to work by French artist Victor Vasarely, who is considered one of the founders of Op Art, the gallery’s trade-fair presentation will focus on contemporary artists who break new ground in the field of abstract art. Italian artist Vincenzo Marsiglia, for example, shows the relationship between new media and technologies in his interactive works, with the observer entering into a personal dialogue with the artwork.

Kunsthandlung Osper (Cologne) will be showing contemporary works as well as works by Cologne-based artist Anton Räderscheidt (1892-1970), one of the leading painters in the New Objectivity movement. Galerie Linde Hollinger (Ladenburg), at its ART.FAIR premiere, will be exhibiting pieces by Turi Simeti, a well-known representative of the Italian Zero movement, as well as current work from Selçuk Dizlek, a young Turkish artist who focuses on the themes of light, color, material and space.

Valéry Kloubert’s meinungsbilder – razor-sharp portraits
From Wim Wenders to Dietrich Grönemeyer and Toni Schumacher – in his series “meinungsbilder”, Valéry Kloubert will present extremely detailed photographic portraits in a special charity exhibition. Kloubert works with handmade black-and-white glass plate negatives, a 19th-century technique. The net proceeds from their sale will go to DKMS, the German Bone Marrow Donor Center.

15 Minutes of Fame – a look behind the scenes at a curator’s work
Following its successful premiere last year, the “15 Minutes of Fame” program is now entering its second round. “With 15 Minutes of Fame, together with Zerooverhead Consulting, ART.FAIR came up with a clear, streamlined concept that the participating galleries and curators can use to integrate their current exhibition projects directly into the trade-fair activities, with live presentations,” explains Director Walter M. Gehlen. The event series addresses gallery owners and curators, artists and visitors alike.

Freiraum
In a 100-square-meter area, Cologne’s free art scene will introduce eight selected artists who are based in the city. Artists from the approximately 40 free art spaces in Cologne are nominated through a call for proposals. Atelierhaus Opekta is responsible for presenting the FREIRAUM works at this year’s premiere. The Cultural Office of the city of Cologne established this initiative, which will give the selected artists from Cologne’s free art scene a large audience at this year’s ART.FAIR.

BLOOOM – the converging art show
BLOOOM – the converging art show will open at the same time as ART.FAIR. One first-time BLOOOM participant is Dutch Gallery Untitled (Rotterdam), which specializes in photography and illustration. The gallery will show works by Lenny Oosterwijk. Also celebrating its BLOOOM premiere is Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst . laurentiu feller (Nuremberg). The gallery will be presenting Nuremberg-based tape artist Evi Kupfer and plastic lamella objects by Caspar Hüter at BLOOOM. Pop artist Jim Avignon will provide live interpretations of painting icons at the trade fair, as requested by visitors. At BLOOOM, more than 20 galleries will be illuminating the boundaries of the art market and its interfaces with the visual arts. From design and fashion to photography and communication design, visitors can discover new forms of artistic expression. This fair, which has been integrated into ART.FAIR both chronologically and physically for six years, focuses specifically on new participants in the art market and supports young galleries and projects. It allows the fair’s founders, Walter M. Gehlen and Andreas E. Lohaus, to support the next generation of artists.

BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER – exhibition for the ten finalists
This aspect is also promoted by the international art contest BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER, which was established by Brauerei Warsteiner. The goal of the contest is to help emerging artists find their footing in the art market. The jury – which this year includes pop artist Jim Avignon and host and Grimme Prize winner Joko Winterscheidt – will choose the ten finalists from among more than 1,500 applications. Their work will be presented in a special exhibition at BLOOOM. The winner will be announced during the big awards ceremony at the kickoff of the trade fair. The evening will be led by well-known TV and radio host Anja Backhaus. Visitors can experience art beyond traditional forms with Mumm, the inspiring sparkling wine brand, at its fair booth. At ART.FAIR, Mumm will be presenting its second artist edition, which will be available in the spring of 2016. Spanish artist Alex Trochut will bring the Mumm world to life with an interactive installation. Among other things, Trochut has created album covers for the Rolling Stones and a Vanity Fair cover.
