New Oil Paintings by Robin Richmond

New York, NY – Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of a new exhibit entitled Sacred Geographies, featuring oil and mixed media paintings by Robin Richmond, an artist who resides in England and in Southwest France. Opening May 12, 6 – 9 PM, thru June 5. An artist's talk will be held on May 22 at 3 PM.

The paintings in this show coincide with the artist's travels over the past 18 months. Richmond was the Artist In Residence at Morse College, Yale University, in fall 2003. In addition to residing in Connecticut, she worked in Paris, traveled extensively in India, and is now in New York City for her show at PSCA. The paintings in this series began in Italy and France, prior to her arrival at Yale.

The viewer will find that Sacred Geographies refers to real places that inform this work without a reference to organized religion or any sort of worship. They refer to places that have inspired the artist. They are sacred in that they are special, extraordinary sources of creativity and beauty. The viewer will find works inspired by Tuscany, the Dordogne, New England, and Western Florida as well as those inspired by Paris, New York, Rajasthan, Varanasi, and Kerala. The resulting artwork, 'comes from a very personal sense of reverence for a given place in a given moment of time. These pictures are a kind of diary of that moment' according to Richmond.

Richmond uses oil and acrylic paints over paper and mixed media that has been applied to the canvas. The works are physically complex and textured, while the colorization and light is unusually strong and rich. The artist uses layers of color and texture made up of glazes, pulp, clay, and fiber. The paintings are abstract with figurative elements, including in some cases collage.

Richmond is an established colorist painter in Europe and she is represented by the prestigious Curwen Gallery in London. This will be her first solo show in New York City. She first exhibited her work in 1968 and has shown her art regularly in Europe ever since. She has authored and illustrated eight books, including Frida Kahlo in Mexico and the very successful Michelangelo and the Creation of the Sistine Chapel, which was translated into twelve languages.

Richmond's works are in the collections of many universities and in the collections of the B.B.C., BP Amoco, the Queen's Solicitors, Lincolns Inn, Unilever, and Coopers & Lybrand. Public collections include the Middlesborough Museum of Art and the San Francisco Fine Art Museum.

PSCA is founded on the premise that the artist comes first and is the raison d'être of the art world. The role of the gallerist is to nurture creative accomplishment and to cultivate the collectors and curators who can sustain artists. The artists represented are those whose work one would wish to collect and to enjoy, while helping to support their careers. PSCA is led by Paul Sharpe, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The space itself is meant to encourage a dialogue in issues in art today and as such is designed as a salon rather than a white box. The color scheme is blue, camel, and white and it is inspired by a Justin Knowles painting of the mid 1960s. The concept is to create a space where artist and art lovers can congregate and appreciate fine contemporary art.
