Poetry festival

Royal Festival Hall (Purcell Room), London

Poetry International 2000 brings together more than fifty of the finest poets in the world for an exhilarating nine-day festival at the Royal Festival Hall. One of the largest poetry festivals ever staged, Poetry International features world-class readings, topical debates, lectures and interviews, special commissions, new collaborative partnerships with musicians and film-makers, masterclasses, children's events, film screenings and an interactive exhibition. For the first time, Poetry International is also timed to coincide with National Poetry Day (5 Oct).

comunicato stampa

Welcome to Britain's most dynamic Poetry Festival, featuring over 50 poets from all over the world. Poetry International 2000 presents a fantastic mix of diverse poets on one platform each night creating a special magic as they spark off each other and the audience.

You can hear work from legendary poets John Ashbery (USA) Yehuda Amichai (Israel) Yves Bonnefoy (France) and Les Murray (Australia), whilst several poets with significant international reputations will be appearing at the festival for the first time - Billy Collins and Marilyn Hacker from the USA, Dorothy Porter from Australia, Tua Forsström from Finland, Dimitri Prigov from Russia and Volker Braun from Germany.

Film director Anthony Minghella presents the festival lecture on poetry and film. We première twelve short films made this summer by children and poets throughout the UK commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall's Education programme with the support of Royal Mail.

Our opening night is an homage to Dante marking seven hundred years since he saw the vision which inspired The Divine Comedy. Nine poets perform their new versions of the cantos in a unique gala performance.

Poetry International 2000 is the first literature festival we know of to have not only a Writer in Residence, poet Liz Lochhead, but also a Reader in Residence, poet Lavinia Greenlaw. We have workshops, surgeries and master classes for budding poets organised with The Poetry School, and a poetry breakfast where festival poets will be revealing the work that inspires them. Readers and writers of poetry have never been so pampered!

Two of Britain's best loved poets, Adrian Mitchell and Brian Patten present shows for younger readers and their families.

We invite you to visit The Poetry Lounge - our interactive poetry exhibition in the Royal Festival Hall foyer where you can watch films, navigate a poetry map and decipher curious communications from poets all over the world, all within an amazing poetry environment.

Poetry International 2000 is staged with the generous support of Royal Mail.
