Brent Sikkema will present an exhibition of new works by Burt Barr. Barr's work is singular in its incorporation of all the arts, in its beguiling first-looks, multi-layered with meaning. It is work of high visual reverence brought to the fore by a highly sophisticated use of camera and edit-free virtuosity.

The screened piece Roz (2004) at first glance, is a music video. The work however, is the very antithesis of that genre. It is a double-entendre: an attractive woman sings in a shower, lipsynching to a man's deep voice. She's coy and flirtatious, singing a dastardly deed of a song. She's murderer and victim. She sings an American Classic, "The Banks of the Ohio," but in a risqué beat.

A second screened work is The Mile: Running Time (2003). As the title suggests, a woman runs the mile on a fog-enshrouded road, the sound of her footsteps echoing throughout. On screen are countdown numbers heading toward zero, and thus the end. Instead of burying the running time in the credits they are presented boldly on-screen and become a focal point, the driving thrust of the piece itself.

Apart from these two works is The Fan (2004), a sculptural work of kinetic bent but very much of the digital/video age. An oscillating fan sits upon a pedestal while a slightly larger projection of the same fan is screened upon it and the wall behind. The light from the projector also creates a shadow of the pedestal-based fan, forming a play of concentric circles on the walls. At the same time, circular reflections twirl around the room, moving to the rhythm of the fan.

Burt Barr has had numerous exhibitions of his work in Europe and the United States, including a 2001 solo exhibition at The Whitney Museum of Art, New York, and a 2002 solo exhibition at the Reina Sofia, Madrid.
