CURATED BY LAURA LOPEZ

Trisha Hanudel
Trisha Hanudel's "Portrait of a Regime" oil painting series depicts prominent members of the Bush Regime, done in the style most befitting: from the pages of a comic book. Using newspaper photos and/or quotes as a basis, these portraits satirize members of the current administration with bold colors and sharp wit.

Mindy Kaplan
Mindy Kaplan appropriates moments of tension derived from film stills and her own life, exploring the way performance can hinder the interpretation of a moment or individual. She removes the images from their context to create new narratives that imply a circularity. While these images draw the observer into the drama unfolding within the canvases, they also hold the viewer at a distance with their ambiguity and hyperbolic absurdity.

Brieana Ruais
In her paintings "Decorative Wallpaper Dresses" Brieana Ruais explores the spiritual and creative oppression experienced by women in the Victorian era, a time that celebrated their lack of participation in the world beyond the kitchen and the drawing room. The artist made these paintings while wearing a restrictive dress of her own, a 1950's dress found in a thrift store.

Rebecca Sherman
Rebecca Sherman's oil paintings feature mirrored walls, windows, and other reflective surfaces within an architectural interior space to create a dialogue between the real world and its surreal imitation. Like memory, there is no stable or set image in the mirror. This continuous movement challenges the limitations of a fixed image. Ultimately, her paintings explore the internal and external contradiction of perception to reflect an overall experience.

Ivette Zighelboim
Ivette Zighelboim's work explores the idea of innocence, embodied in stereotypically 'cute' forms in order to refer to the origin of human sentiments and how these sentiments relate to our own helplessness in the face of inevitable death. Through the use of popular imagery and elements of kitsch she is bringing timeless human concerns into the reality of today where the ideas of biology, technology, and religion are interchangeable.

A Reception will be held for the artists on Friday, June 25th from 6-8pm
