This exhibition, curated by Su Ditta, brings together eight of Rokeby's interactive media works created between 1986 and 2003 including Seen, Canada's entry in the Venice Biennale 2002, 8th International Architecture Exhibition, and Machine for Taking Time, a work commissioned for Oakville Galleries in 2001. For this work, Rokeby mounted a small surveillance camera on a wooden beam outside the gallery in Gairloch Gardens which continues to record and archive thousands of visual images of the gardens.

Curated by Su Ditta
Toronto-based artist David Rokeby has been making interactive
installation art with computers since the early 1980s. Rokeby is
renowned for creating the original software that drives his work.
Many of his pieces manufacture an exquisitely subtle virtual space
where viewers use their bodies to interact with machines, challenging
the usual computer interface of keyboard or mouse. A remarkable
innovator and inventor in his field, David Rokeby received a Governor
General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2002.
This exhibition, curated by Su Ditta, brings together eight of
Rokeby's interactive media works created between 1986 and 2003
including Seen, Canada's entry in the Venice Biennale 2002, 8th
International Architecture Exhibition, and Machine for Taking Time, a
work commissioned for Oakville Galleries in 2001. For this work,
Rokeby mounted a small surveillance camera on a wooden beam outside
the gallery in Gairloch Gardens which continues to record and archive
thousands of visual images of the gardens. The images are then
processed and reordered by a computer and projected onto a screen
suspended in front of windows with the actual garden in view. This
work raises questions about the ubiquitous presence of surveillance
technology, the blurry boundary between public and private space and
the fabricated nature of electronic image recording.
steamingmedia.org, a collaborative work produced at the Banff Centre
for the Arts with Finnish artist Tapio Mäkelä, is on view this
September as part of a satellite exhibition at the Canadian Film
Centre in Toronto.
