In celebration of 200 years of Haitian Independence, The Fondation Sant D'A Jakmel is proud to announce the first edition of the Festival Film Jakmel.
Seventy films, representing a summary of the history of cinema in Haiti, will be presented over the course of ten days throughout the city of Jakmel, a city renowned for its cultural orientations. Featuring both contemporary and historic, documentary and fiction films, by Haitian and foreign directors, the festival is open to the public and all events are free of charge.
In collaboration with local residents, businesses, institutions, and authorities, screenings will be held in some of the city's beautiful historic coffee houses, public squares, schools and civic buildings.
It is the first time such an event has occurred in Jakmel and in most cases also the first time these films have been publicly screened in the city if not in Haiti. Through encompassing some of the earliest films to the most contemporary, we aim to offer an informative celebration of identity, diversity, humor, tragedy and imagination.
In addition to multiple daily screenings, there will be many directors present for question and answer sessions, daily seminars on filmmaking, evening concerts, book signings, and art exhibits.
The festival will open with a large outdoor screening followed by a concert and will close with an audience prize ceremony.
The Festival Film Jakmel is the initiative of Patrick Boucard, Haitian artist and founder of the Sant D'A Jakmel and David Belle, American film director living in Haiti.
All screenings will be free and open to the public.
