Inventive Energy

Organising a Biennial International Design Festival in St-Etienne may seem like quite a gamble to some people, but the event which took place in November 1998 was a great hit among the public (125,000 visitors) and the national and international media. From day 1, it became an unmissable event on the international design calendar.

For 9 days the Biennial Festival 1998 brought together a mass of professionals, businesses and fans, around a packed programme of exhibitions, symposia and seminars.

The second event takes place from 7 to 15 October 2000. It will present design creations from about 100 countries.

The Town of St-Etienne is being mobilised to provide an exhibition area of some 30,000 m2, spread over eight main sites.

The exhibition will provide a spot light on the diversity of design in the world through a plethora of objects which will help us to decipher the mind-set and the important issues of our time. For 9 days in St-Etienne, freelance designers, design agencies, publishers, companies, schools, design organisations and centres, magazines and the like representing art, fashion, urban innovation, architecture etc, etc will converge to provide a design panorama.

Objects born of traditional skills will rub shoulders with symbolic consumer items; student creations with professional output; young talent with famous designers; countries where design is a cornerstone of their culture with countries where design is just emerging.

So the purpose of this journey is to show the public that there isn't just one design attitude, but as many points of view as designers have ideas, and to contemplate a progress which would take account of basic human needs - where "globalisation" would not be synonymous with "trivialisation".

Under the auspices of the town of St-Etienne, this event is being organised by the Fine Arts School (FAS), in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art and the specific participation, for the year 2000, of the St-Etienne School of Architecture, the Le Corbusier Espace at Firminy, the Rhône-Alpes Design Centre, FRAPNA (the Rhône-Alpes Federation for the Protection of Nature and Wildlife), the French Design Institute, etc.

It also has the support of the Mission 2000 in France, the AFAA (French Association for Artistic Action), the Ministry of Culture, the Loire en Rhône-Alpes Regional Council, and other private partnerships.
