Two shows

Artists-in-Residence 2003-2004

This annual exhibition will feature the work of the 2003-2004 Artists-in-Residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem: Dave Mckenzie, Wangechi Mutu, and William Villalongo. Conceived at the formation of the Studio Museum over 30 years ago, the A-I-R program and exhibition remain central to the Museum 's identity. Distinguished alumni include Chakaia Booker, David Hammons, Kerry James Marshall, Julie Mehretu, Alison Saar and Nari Ward.

After nine months in the studio, this year's artists-in-residence, Dave McKenzie, Wangechi Mutu and William Villalongo, are ready for their close-ups. With work in a variety of media, addressing pointed, political and poetic themes, Figuratively takes us into outer-galactic orbits of figuration, mythology and narrative.

McKenzie's sculptures and videos range from a four-inch tall, ironic Portrait as Ghost, to a Harlem-wide performance as Bill Clinton. Set to the soundtrack of "We Shall Overcome," this video is both a self-imposed exercise and public experiment in which McKenzie, comedically disguised as Bill Clinton, strolls around Harlem greeting his neighbors. Mutu work, on the other hand, takes the form of drawing, painting and collage, but is equally provocative. As Erika Muhammad writes in the catalogue brochure, "A native of Kenya, Mutu mines her country's cultural traditions to recombine the African female body within the allegorical paradigms of postcolonial horrors, high fashion and anthropological exploration and adventure." Working in mixed media including a site-specific wall drawing, Mutu's portraits of alien figures, fungal forms and mechanical explosions inhabit a universe of their own. Villalongo's figures and narratives are also derived from a wide array of art-historical figures and movements, from Hieronymous Bosch to Robert Colescott, or from Bronzino to Kara Walker. Sexual, sensual and sensuous, his compositions on black velvet and canvas are filled with Cupids, space aliens, nymphs and satyrs where science fiction meets 16th-century allegory painting.

A fully-illustrated catalogue brochure with an introduction by the exhibition curator, Christine Y. Kim and essays by Lauri Firstenberg, Susette Min and Erika Dalya Muhammad, is available at the museum.

Seeds and Roots
Installed in the main gallery, Seeds and Roots: Selections from the Permanent Collection will present over thirty works of art by 20th century black artists. This selection of gifts and acquisitions illus- trates the depth and diversity of the Studio Museum's permanent collection as it is growing, from its first holdings to its most recent acquisitions. Paintings by Beauford Delaney and Norman Lewis, for example, are presented alongside works by David Hammons, Quentin Morris, Alison Saar and Lorna Simpson. Spanning over fifty years, these historic works explore richness of ideas and imagery of the African diaspora throughout Africa, Europe and the Americas today. Work by black artists living and working in Africa and Europe, such as Mark Brandenburg , Samuel Fosso, Chris Ofili, Tracey Rose and Malik Sidibe are also included in this unprecedented exhibition dedicated to artistic cultivation and growth.
