The position of the figure in photography and video
Modern Culture will present ''Sitting, Standing, Reclining,''a group exhibition
of photographs and one video work by Roberta Bayley, Chiara, Jen DeNike, Godlis,
Michael Halsband, Valentina Loi, New Catalogue, Melanie Schiff, and Elizabeth Young.
''Sitting, Standing, Reclining'' will examine the position of the figure in
photography and video in this exhibition of works by a selection of artists
based in New York, Chicago, and Italy.
Roberta Bayley (New York) succeeded in capturing the authentic in posture at a
time when ''posing'' was a major burden on the culture-at-large. The work of
Ms. Bayley, the chief photographer of ''Punk'' Magazine in the late 1970's and
early 1980's, has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in the USA,
Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Self-portraitist Chiara (Rome) celebrates (and pokes fun of) images of
modern-day womanhood, as interpreted in advertising and product packaging. In
2002, Chiara was one of the first two winners of the then-newly established
Premio New York, a studio residency and exhibition grant prize program of the
Italian Academy at Columbia University.
In ''Confessions Of a Suburban Vampire,'' Jen DeNike (New York) depicts freshly
''fanged'' victims of an unseen vampire in vivid but everyday contemporary
locations. The work of Ms. DeNike, an alumna of Bard College's MFA program, is
currently on view in ''Boys Behaving Badly,'' a group exhibition at the
Contemporary Art Museum Houston.
A master of existing-light photography, Godlis (New York) is recognized for his
nighttime photographs of CBGB's in the mid- to late-1970's. His 1976 portrait
of Patti Smith on the Bowery is featured on the cover of ''Blank Generation
Revisited: The Early Days Of Punk Rock'' (New York: Schirmer Books, 1997;
out-of-print).
Jean-Michel Basquiat's sense of style is evident in the photographs taken by
Michael Halsband (New York) during their 1985 trip to Europe. Mr. Halsband is
widely recognized for his double-portraits of Basquiat and Andy Warhol wearing
boxing gloves.
Reconciling the performative, the pictorial, and the sculptural, Valentina Loi
(Milan) produces video works that are reminiscent of early cinema. The work of
Ms. Loi, an alumna of NYU MFA program, has been featured in ''Manifesta 4''and
Artist's Space.
A two-person collaborative, New Catalogue (Chicago) takes emo to a new level of
significance. A solo exhibition of their series of portraits of Big Ten co-eds
wearing ski masks was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, in
May 2004.
Melanie Schiff (Chicago) poetically explores subtle juxtapositions in pictures
and in life. Ms. Schiff's work had been featured in ''Here and Now,'' Chicago
Cultural Center, in 2002.
The work of Elizabeth Young marks a return of the ''beautiful photograph'' to
the forefront of art. A solo exhibition of Ms. Young's work will be presented
at Modern Culture in February/March 2005.
''Sitting, Standing, Reclining'' will open on the 8th of July 2004 and
will remain on view through the 10th of September 2004.
Modern Culture is located at 730 Fifth Avenue, 9th Floor, (between 56th & 57th
Street) in the 57th Street District of Midtown Manhattan.
Viewing hours for this exhibition will be Monday to Friday, 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
