This traveling exhibition will feature nearly 150 paintings, drawings and sculptures by one of the most influential artists to emerge from Japan during the Pop art movements of the nineties.

Nothing Ever Happens

This traveling exhibition, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, will feature nearly 150 paintings, drawings and sculptures by Yoshitomo Nara, one of the most influential artists to emerge from Japan during the Pop art movements of the nineties. Admission to the San Jose Museum of Art and the exhibit is free. In conjunction with Nothing Every Happens, SJMA and San Jose's Anno Domini gallery will present Art of Zines 04, a celebration of the creative and often subversive phenomenon of the zine.

SJMA will present several events associated with the Nara exhibit. These include “It’s Only Art, But I Like It,” a discussion with artist Yoshitomo Nara, singer/writer Carrie Brownstein of the band Sleater-Kinney and rock critic Josh Kun on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at 6:00 pm at the San Jose Repertory Theatre. A book signing will follow at the Museum. Tickets are $30 for SJMA Members and $40 for non-members, to purchase tickets or to join the Museum, please call (408) 271-6867.

The Museum will hold a Members' Preview Party on July 24 at 8:00 p.m. Featuring music by Bay Area DJs CatFive, a hosted bar, and appetizers, attendance is free to SJMA members and $20 for non-members. ARTIST BIOS
Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Nara, who currently lives and works in Tokyo, received his B.F.A. (1985) and an M.F.A. (1987) from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. Between 1988 and 1993, Nara studied at the Kunstakademie Dussledorf, in Dusseldorf, Germany. Nara has exhibited widely in his native Japan and abroad and has had nearly 40 solo exhibitions since 1984.

Josh Kun is a Los Angeles-based writer and Assistant Professor of English at University of California, Riverside. His music column, "Frequencies," runs in the San Francisco Bay Guardian and the Boston Phoenix , and he has written for the Los Angeles Times , Los Angeles Magazine , SPIN , L.A. Weekly , and many other publications. His first book is forthcoming from University of California Press.

Carrie Brownstein is a writer and musician from Portland, Oregon. A graduate of the Evergreen State College, where she received her degree in sociolinguistics, her writing has appeared in Index magazine; Time Out New York ; the Seattle Times ; She Sounds So Sad, Do You Think She Is? The Paradoxes of Pop (Harvard University Press); and a forthcoming monograph on artist Nikki McClure. Brownstein, a classically-trained pianist, is also better known as a guitarist, songwriter and singer in the rock band Sleater-Kinney.

The Koret Foundation is a major sponsor of the San Jose presentation of Yoshitomo Nara: Nothing Ever Happens .

Yoshitomo Nara: Nothing Every Happens was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland and guest-curated by Kristin Chambers. The traveling exhibition was sponsored by an anonymous donor with the additional support of the Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, The Japan Foundation, Toby Devan Lewis, The Peter Norton Family Foundation, Nancy and Joel Portnoy and Jennifer McSweeney Reuss.
