Top 100. About a year and a half ago, Davide Bertocchi invited one hundred international curators and art critics to select their all-time favourite song. A seemingly simple question, that at the same time is almost insidious and ultimately intimate. Nothing is more revealing than one's personal taste in music.
TOP 100-SCULPTURE
About a year and a half ago, Davide Bertocchi invited one hundred international curators and art critics to select their all-time favourite song. A seemingly simple question, that at the same time is almost insidious and ultimately intimate. Nothing is more revealing than one's personal taste in music. With these hundred favourite records Davide Bertocchi created a sculpture: a fiberglass kayak on wheels made of vinyl records, entitled 'TOP 100'. On one side the wheels consists of 33 rpm records, on the other side of 45 rpm records - making the vehicle asymetrical and only able to move in circles.
Circulair movements are a recurring theme in Bertocchi's work. The animation video 'Limo' (2001-2002), for example, features a white limousine going around in circles through the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The limousine is digitally rendered to fit the curved space of this famous museum. In an endless loop the limo - symbol of glamour and success, and favourite mode of transportation for many pop stars – orbits the circular ramp.
TOP 100-MP3-CD
Davide Bertocchi will create an installation for his 'TOP 100'-sculpture in the exhibition space of Quarantine Series. Also, Bertocchi and Quarantine Series, in collaboration with the Dena Foundation for Contemporary Art, Paris and the Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena, have produced a limited edition of mp3-cd's with the one hundred selected songs. This 'TOP 100'-cd offers a revealing insight into the personal and 'aesthetic' decisions of the hundred most important 'decision makers' in the international art world today.
The 'TOP 100'-cd will be launched at the opening of the exhibition – Friday 10th September, 9 pm – with a special DJ-battle between the curator of Quarantine Series and several international curators.
Opening: Friday 10th September 2004, 9 pm
