Still Life

Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London

... in 20th Century Italy. The exhibition aims to provide an overview of the still life genre in Italy between 1914 and 1960 when there were innumerable schools, personalities and influences at work. The response of Italian artists to the revival of still life painting during the 20th century was innovative and varied. From Morandi's great enthusiasm for the subject to its rejection by the Futurists this exhibition follows the fortunes of the genre in works by Balla, Carra', Casorati, de Chirico, de Pisis, Rosai, Pannaggi, Pirandello, Severini and others.

... in 20th Century Italy
30 September to 19 December 2004

The exhibition aims to provide an overview of the still life genre in Italy between 1914 and 1960 when there were innumerable schools, personalities and influences at work.

The response of Italian artists to the revival of still life painting during the 20th century was innovative and varied. From Morandi's great enthusiasm for the subject to its rejection by the Futurists – who considered it a Northern European 'export' fundamentally alien to Mediterranean culture – this exhibition follows the fortunes of the genre in works by Balla, Carrà, Casorati, de Chirico, de Pisis, Rosai, Pannaggi, Pirandello, Severini and others.

Around half of the forty works on show come from private Italian collections and will be on view to the public for the first time. These are complemented by other major examples from Italian museums and the Estorick's permanent collection. Still Life in 20th Century Italy will reveal to the visitor much about the artists who created the works. As Jean Cocteau wrote: “It is the life of the painter that fills the emptiness of the still life'.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 72-page, fully-illustrated catalogue published by Mazzotta, Milan.
