In some of the paintings the female subjects are adorned with halos or rise heavenward. In other works, the girls are painted in muted shades and stare out of the canvas in dark psychology.

31GRAND is proud to present Mike Cockrill’s exhibition “then againâ€. Cockrill’s new body of work takes a fresh look at religious, mythological and propaganda art and recasts it into the idioms of the American middle-class dream. In some of the paintings the female subjects are adorned with halos or rise heavenward. In other works, the girls are painted in muted shades and stare out of the canvas in dark psychology. Males are industrious, often angelic, and usually one dimensional, secondary characters, the supporting cast enhancing the position of the women. The paintings and drawings in “then again†force viewers to rethink their perceptions – on femininity, innocence, sexuality, and American mores in general; the subject matter and style feel familiar, as Cockrill's references reach across art history - from the Italian Renaissance to Postwar America. In paintings that meld I950s lifestyle magazines with contemporary family snapshots, old postcards, and other found imagery, he creates his own subtle and disturbing tableaux.
