comunicato stampa

Born in Rethymno, Crete in 1960; lives and works in Athens.

The grids’s mythic power is that it makes able to think we are dealing with materialism (or sometimes science or logic) while as the same time it provides us with a release into belief (or illusion, or fiction).*

In many essays, Rosalind Krauss identifies the grid as a structure that has remained emblematic of modernist ambition, as a fragment, a tiny piece arbitrarily cropped from an infinitely larger fabric and a staircase to the universal.*

This first solo exhibition of Nikos Alexiou’s work at Unlimited Contemporary Art focuses on this double reading: every tiny detail is a part equal of the whole and in the geometric and systematic logic, the artist injects his own perception and experience of space and time.

Using humble and fragile materials such as cut-out papers, reeds, threads in various collages and constructions, working with patience and repetition, Nikos Alexiou develops different series: Cut-out papers (Dantelota), Reed Gazebos (Kalamia), The Labyrinth (Fear)…

Each of those series evoques emblematic/archetypal forms, all connected one to the other, a formal vocabularythat reoccurs in different combinations, that spreads out all over the space and refers to the artist’s observation of the contemporary reality. It reflects his own experience at the Mount Athos few years ago, lost in the silence of the mosaics, paths and maps (Holly Monastery Iviron), as well as his fascination for chaotic and noisy cities such as Athens or New York, filled by people, strangled by anarchic or beyond measure architecture.

Through sculptures, installations, drawings, computer prints and video, this first comprehensive exhibtion of Nikos Alexiou aims to mirror the never-ending process and effort as well as the whole body of work.
