Sunsets. With a selection of over 60 paintings and some 20 woodcuts, the exhibition shows for the first time the importance of this motif in Felix Vallotton's landscape works, as well as the determining influence it has had on some of his boldest creative innovations.

With a selection of over 60 paintings and some 20 woodcuts, the exhibition shows for the first time the importance of this motif in Félix Vallotton's landscape works, as well as the determining influence it has had on some of his boldest creative innovations. Nowhere else does Vallotton venture so far towards abstraction as in the 'Sunsets' painted between 1900 and 1925. Nature is here reduced to abstract compositions consisting of a few, heavily contrasted, horizontal colour stripes, and these works are reminiscent of the attempts towards abstraction undertaken at the same time by other pioneers of modern painting such as Hodler, Munch or Mondrian.
