From nowhere to somewhere without return

Coleman Projects, London

The knowledge. For this project, the eleven artists are invited to break down and re-trace the open and displacing concept of 'unknown and empty space', and focus on the various aspects and stages of occupying and comprehending an unfamiliar place. Choosing the invitational formula rather than the selection process, the curator ultimately aims to provide not so much a theme, but rather a starting point for a journey 'without return', leaving the artists and finally the viewers to find their potential destinations.

As part of the programme for the year 2004, COLEMAN PROJECT SPACE presents the second part of the exhibition From Nowhere to Somewhere without Return, devised and curated by Irene Amore.

In their past work the invited artists have already shown a particular interest in the perception of space – whether it be architectural, geographical, related to the body, a place where history leaves its traces, or a space described by an erratic language. Some of them have often given special attention to the interaction between the material nature of a place and its abstraction. Others explore the relationship between "utopia" and the ironic acknowledgement of the intricacies implied when measuring up and moving in a particular but foreign space.

For this project, the eleven artists are invited to break down and re-trace the open and displacing concept of "unknown and empty space", and focus on the various aspects and stages of occupying and comprehending an unfamiliar place. Choosing the invitational formula rather than the selection process, the curator ultimately aims to provide not so much a theme, but rather a starting point for a journey "without return", leaving the artists and finally the viewers to find their potential destinations.

After its first part was held in Rome earlier this year at Change + Partner Contemporary Art, the project is now relocating to London where it will shift strategy, and will take different shape with newly commissioned works.

Hence, in Rome the works exhibited were all proposed and/or produced "in darkness", that is to say without any pre-knowledge of the exhibition space. For this second part in London, inverting the coordinates, all artists have been asked to work in close relationship with the project space, its location and its features, teasing the allegedly neutral role of a "white cube" exhibition space such as Coleman Project Space.
