Lehmann Maupin would like to announce an exhibition of 24 new works by Gilbert & George. This will be their second exhibition at Lehmann Maupin and will run concurrently with Sonnabend Gallery.
Known for their controversial work, Gilbert & George continue to use bright-colored images to communicate thoughts and feelings they consider to have universal significance. Gilbert & George expose unmentionable subjects and challenge social conventions with this series of digital pictures. This is their first foray into the use of digital media exhibited in New York.
Gilbert & George began working together in 1967 when they met at St Martin's School of Art. They were shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1984 and won in 1986. The work of Gilbert & George has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The National Art Gallery in Beijing among others. Upcoming exhibitions include representing Britain at the Venice Biennale and their retrospective at the Tate in 2005. A new catalogue of their work, published by Phaidon, will be available at the galleries.
