The show explores our complex physical, cultural and personal identities through the work of 14 international artists. They investigate 'belonging': our sense of who we are through our relationship with others. Their work questions the rigidity of terms such as 'us', 'them' and 'others', and instead draws attention to the way we all differ slightly from one another.

Self explores our complex physical, cultural and personal identities through the work of this international group of artists. They investigate 'belonging': our sense of who we are through our relationship with others. Their work questions the rigidity of terms such as 'us', 'them' and 'others', and instead draws attention to the way we all differ slightly from one another.
Dominant images in today's media promote an idealised society, which often denies both our individuality and diversity and fails to value the contribution of people who are excluded from this sanitised representation. Through photography, jewellery and installation, these artists respond to their own experience of the status quo, to explore the value of difference and to challenge accepted stereotypes.
Self also acknowledges those aspects of life that we share and invites the viewer to bring their own meaning to the work. The exhibition encourages visitors to recognise aspects of themselves which are not commonly represented, to consider their own responses, and to develop their awareness of the value of diversity.
