Posters of the 1936-1939 War

Palau de la Virreina, Barcelona

The selected posters illustrate the Republican values that the Spanish government and political, trade union and social organizations of the period defended against the fascist uprising. They are also an example of truly avant-garde art. For many this is an exceptional case of the fusion of both the political and the artistic avant-garde.

comunicato stampa

Poster-making passed through a period in the thirties when it particularly flourished in Europe as a means to transmit not only messages and ideas, but also the artistic tendencies of the time. With the proclamation of the Second Republic in Spain an army of painters, illustrators, designers and graphic artists in the service of the Republican cause wagered for an avant-garde approach to poster-making which went on to acquire exceptional value.

The artists followed the line of First World War posters, intensifying the effectiveness of the messages and resorting to imagination to broaden traditional subjects (enlistment, caution against enemy espionage, political symbols, etc.), but also included calls for education and hygiene, as well as warnings about the abuses that proliferate in wartime situations and so on.

At its headquarters in the University of Alcalá de Henares, the Fundación Pablo Iglesias conserves over two thousand propaganda posters which have become an extraordinary testimony to Republican poster-making.

Some two hundred posters of diverse origin (the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, the General Workers’ Union, the Spanish Communist Party, Unified Young Socialists, Republican Left, National Work Federation and the Iberian Anarchist Federation, as well as various Republican government ministries and several organizations of the time that had their own image) have been chosen from this collection to be exhibited.

The selected posters illustrate the Republican values that the Spanish government and political, trade union and social organizations of the period defended against the fascist uprising. They are also an example of truly avant-garde art. For many this is an exceptional case of the fusion of both the political and the artistic avant-garde.

Some of the authors of the posters on display are anonymous, but we can also find known artists, notable among them for the uniqueness of their work being Amster, Bagaria, Ballester, Bardasano, Cañavate, Espert, Renau and Tono.
